Spider-Man: The Animated Series Doppelganger Spider-Man (1996)
review by justin anderson
the desription:
the articulation: The head slides up and down, each of the 6 arms has a shoulder
joint, and each leg is jointed at the
hip and knee.
the design: I like it. Toy Biz took the right step by giving it a lot of muscular
detail, no gimmicks, and a mouthful
of teeth. I love the way the tongue sticks out, and the eyes are properly
segmented and painted silver. The fingers
and toes are sculpted in a bony, sharp detail, and the proportions are not
human. Colors are as you'd expect, red and
blue with black web detailings. The elbows even have spikes.
It's nice to see Toy Biz do a good figure with six arms. Multi-armed Spidey had
all the arms on a side on one joint, and
two of his arms were attached to the arm above, not the body(a victim of a
gimmick). And the animated Man-Spider's
arms were prone to tearing off.
While there aren't any gimmicks, there is a sort of "transformation" referenced
to. Pivot the head up, and rotate
the legs backwards to get the toy in an eight-legged spider pose. The universal
hip joints are the only thing even
allowing this pose, and not even they look too out of place. This pose is
probably the only reason knee joints
were added, seeing as the arms lack elbow joints.
The figure stands 5" tall(keep in mind, he's a hunchback), and stands 2" in
spider formation.
The figure includes 1 accessory, which fills the required Toy Biz gimmick. A
small alien plant, about 2 inches
tall, with a button in the flytrap mouth to snap the jaws shut.
the review:
My Doppelganger is now showing some heavy paint wear from age, but nothing I
can't fix (with paint, or eBay).
Possibly the best monster figure the animated series produced. And aside from
poseability, has detail and accuracy
which rivals the current classics figures. ***** out of *****
