Spider-Man: The Movie Mary Jane Watson (2002)

Movie Mary Jane review by justin anderson

the desription: There have been few Mary Jane figures released over the years. To help make up for this, the movie version graces wave 2.

the articulation: The figure stands 6" tall, with 10 joints total- neck, shoulders, biceps, waist, hips, and knees. She's wearing a red Chinese-styled dress, the bottom half being a separate piece of plastic that hangs separate from the legs (Toy Biz has used this on a few of their video game figures). Though being a stiff rubber, the leg articulation is limited.

the design: I'm almost guessing they used the RealScan technology for the face, since they're getting more accurate face sculpts in this line than they did for X-Men.

The figure comes with a wall-mountable platform, a small balcony. 2 suction cups are included, but screws would probably be a better choice for mounting it to a wall(if these suction cups hold, then someone likes you).

This platform also has a "breakaway" feature, causing the front half to swing downward. But, while this looked good on paper, it doesn't quite work. Because the button you have to press also puts pressure on the front half. Basically, it won't swing with your finger pressing in on it. The addition of 2 small pegs to support the figure by the holes in the feet would have also helped a lot.

the review:Figures like this have their good and bad points. On the good side, they tend to keep lines such as this from being padded with too many variants of one character. On the bad side, they often don't get the treatment they deserve in the creation process. On the whole, I'd give it a ***** star rating, basically because it's not gimmick-ridden, and offers one of the few distractions from keeping the line solely dominated by Spider-Man and the Green Goblin. Besides, not too many toys come with their own display shelf.

*Note- a few figures, from the initial producion run, hsipped with a pink dress instead of red. This was a factory error, and caught almost immediately. Very few pink dress figures hit store shelves.
