Spencer Smythe
First appearance: Amazing Spider-Man #25

A brillient scientist and inventor, Spenser Smythe was the creator of the original Spider-Slayer, a device he introduced to J. Jonah Jameson as a means of Jameson achieving his goal of capturing Spider-Man. When Spider-Man was able to survive their first encounter Smythe became obsessed with his failure and his next Spider-Slayer became much more aggressive and strong. Once again experiencing defeat Smythe became driven towards the goal of defeating and stopping Spider-Man, all the while unaware of the fact that the radioactive elements being used to power his devices was slowly killing him.

Smythe appeared some time later, having used his downtime to create replicas of the Vulture, Sandman and Kingpin. Spider-Man once again defeated Smythe's robots and became totally involved in his work once more even utilizing an assistent, Marla Madison, who went on to become involved with Jameson whom she later married. Smythe's next plan had him, now fully aware of the fact that he was dying, executing revenge upon both Spider-Man and Jameson, who Smythe felt had initially forced him to the create the Spider-Slayers, when in fact it was he who was driven towards them. Smythe died a short while into his plan never knowing that he had failed once more in his final attack.

Some time after his death, Spencer's son, Alistair, a grossly obese young man, neglected by his father, came into Spider-Man's life, vowing to carry on his father's goal of the death's of Jameson and Spider-Man.

Powers and Abilities: Spencer Smythe was a scientist of average height and weight, whose hair, due to the stress of his devotion turned grey in a very short time.
