Welsh Snow Pictures and setups at bottom of page |

Wales is a beautiful country with its picturesque mountains, small hillside villages, friendly communities and very changeable weather! Although Wales is very close to the NAD it often has spectacular snowfalls thanks to its great Height . Snowfall is often brought on by small areas of low pressure from the channel or from NW France. Fronts from the North can give Wales light coverings or sprinklings as with any places in the UK. But the best source comes from a NW wind which often brings an unstable airflow and cold winds with it. This often gives short lived but intense showers of wintry precipitation. ________________________________________________________________________________ Here courtesy of James (JackFrost) we have some information of previous snowfalls in Wales from the last couple of years There was slightly above average snowfall in my part of Wales this year compared to previous years. The first snowfall here was on Dec 21st when a few snow showers in the evening gave a light covering of 2cm but it was all gone by Christmas as milder weather took over. There was a number of occasions when snow and sleet fell but there was nothing significant until Jan 28th. So on the evening of Jan 28th a trough passed through with torrential rain for a while. Then the rain turned to very heavy blizzards with slight drifting and by the end of the evening there was a covering of 5cm. Feb 26th started of sunny but soon heavy snow showers pushed in giving a partial covering in places by 2pm. But then about 3pm very very heavy snow started to fall covering everything even the motorways. Busses were stopped and the next day schools were closed. There was an even covering of 7-10cms with a max depth of 16cms. But it still wasnt over.... On Mar 11th an Atlantic weather front bumped into cold easterly winds. There was a massive blizzard and once again everything was covered including main roads and motorways causing chaos. The next day schools were closed and some trains cancelled because of branches on the rails because of the weight of the snow. There was an even covering of 10-14cms and a max depth of 23cms. |
