Julip History. |
In 1945 the first Julip Model horse was created by sculptress Lavender Gander Dower. These first models were made from chamois leather and had lead piping in their legs and are extremely rare to find today. In around 1950 Julip began to make the horses from latex and insert wire into the legs. 1966 saw the Julip company sold to Mr and Mrs Heath and the name changed from Julip Associates to Julip Model Horses Ltd. A lot of the old moulds at this time were replaced by new and a lot of body parts from these old horses we believe were used to make some of the new moulds too. There are some Julip moulds who are just too similar in appearance to be completely new moulds. 1969 saw the introduction of a very familiar mould which was extremely similar to a certain well known horse made by a different company. This horse when first released even had the remains of a bridle and neck strap which had been removed from the original sculpture. There was one and as far as I know only one which was discovered in a box in Beauchamp Place with bridle and neck strap still intact and painted. This was a huge piebald and Sue and Les often wonder what happened to that horse and what would have been said had they wanted to buy him. Julip Ltd is now owned by Annabel Levaux~Davis and is based in Dorset. The originals are still being made in exactly the same way as they have always been with the wire in their legs and latex bodies. The only real difference is that synthetic hair is now being used instead of the fleece tops and mohair. The horses are still hand painted and all unique. We are very lucky that Julip are still around today as all the other toy companies who made similar latex models are all closed down. Annabel also introduced the HOTY range or Horse of the Year range which is aimed more at children but still just as collectable as the originals. The HOTY models are made from plastic and are solid making them very heavy and durable to play with. These sets are highly popular and at second hand these horses can make crazy prices for the older sets. |
