Francine Joy Drescher was born on September 30th, 1957 in Flushing, Queens, New York to Morty and Sylvia Drescher. Fran, who is of Italian and Russian-Jewish Descent, attended Hillcrest High school in New York with another now-famous name, Ray Romano. She was a studious girl and was quite popular. In fact, Fran was first runner up for "Miss New York Teenager" in 1973. In order to get an agent, she lied when calling up talent agencies and said she was the winner. It worked and an agent was found.
At age fifteen she'd met the man she thought she'd spend the rest of her life with. That man was Peter Marc Jacobson. The two married very young with their parents consent.
To make ends meet, Peter and Fran entered cosmetology school and became hair stylists, all the while attending auditions.
Her first break was in the unforgettable movie, Saturday Night Fever (1977) with John Travolta. Fran played the sexy Lolita with two left feet, Fran loved the experience and decided to make acting her career.
But the road was not easy, Fran was told on many occasions that if she didn't drop her accent, she would never make it. Although she tried, Fran had difficulty losing her distinct Brooklyn accent.
After Saturday Night Fever, Fran continued to find work in small roles in films like the legendary This Is Spinal Tap, directed by Rob Reiner in which she played agent Bobbie Fleckman, a role she would reprise later for her own show, The Nanny.
She also found work in films like, The Hollywood Knights, opposite a very young Michelle Pfeiffer, UHF, opposite Weird Al Yankovich and Michael Richard (Kramer from Seinfeld), American Hot Wax, opposite Jay Leno, Caddilac Man opposite Tim Robbins and Robin Williams and Dr. Detroit, costarring Dan Akkroyd and future wife Donna Dixon who went on to become Fran's life long friends.
It was during this time that tragedy struck Fran's life, when two armed assailants entered Fran & Peter's apartment, and brutally raped Fran.
Fran turned to her best friends Dan and Donna, then, after the perpetrator's were caught, she and Peter tried to move on with their lives as best they could.
After taking a much needed holiday alone in England, visiting  60's icon Twiggy, her good friend and co-star in the short lived TV series Princesses, Fran came up with the idea for "The Nanny". (1993).
As the now legendary story goes, while Fran baby sat Twiggy's young daughter, she became accutely aware of how different she was from the young girl and in fact, from most of the people in England, and the thought occured to her that this would make an excellent basis for a television show, sort of like, "The Sound Of Music" but with a Brooklyn accent.
As the story continues, Fran was, by  sheer chance sharing the same plane as the (then) president of CBS, Jeff Sagansky, while on a trip to Paris. After scolding him for serving her up as the side dish, she informed him that she was, "The main course". She convinced him to hear her and her husband Peter's ideas for the television show. After impressing him with her persistence, intelligence, and charm, "The Nanny's" pilot was filmed less than a year later."The Nanny" became an instant success, and so did Fran. During that time, Fran starred and produced the film The Beautician and the Beast (1997), alongside Timothy Dalton and and later Picking Up the Pieces (2000) co-starring Woody Allen.
It was after this that Fran's life took a turn for the worse. After some intense therapy, Fran realized that she had never really dealt with her rape, and that she and Peter were drifting apart, having only the show, The Nanny in common.
In 1997, CBS decided to cancel the Nanny, despite the fact that she show never dropped out of the top twenty, and consistantly won it's time slot. Fran was forced by CBS exec's to lie, claiming that the idea to quit was her's and that she wanted to leave while the show was still on top. The Nanny aired it's last show with much fanfare and very high ratings.
After the show went off the air, Fran and Peter divorced and Fran took some time to deal with her rape.
But once again, fate reared it's ugly head when Fran was diagnosed with uterine cancer. After continually being misdiagnosed by several doctors, Fran finally learned she was suffering from the disease and underwent treatment, which caused her immense pain and some weight gain. Since Fran was keeping her illness private, this lead many people to speculate about Fran's health.
After winning her battle with cancer, Fran decided to go public with her struggles and wrote a best selling book, "Cancer Shmancer" . She then became an advocate for uterine cancer, and for early detection.
Fran also made another television appearance on the NBC show, "Good Morning Miami" and has filmed a pilot show called, "Shacking Up" which aired in 2004.
Fran continues to work in film and telelvison, has remained good friends with ex-husband Peter Jacobson and after losing her beloved pet Chester, adopted a new dog who is named, "Esther". Fran bought and redecorated her dream Malibu beach home, and just before her bout with cancer, had begun a new relationship with a much younger man. While Fran enjoyed the relationship, it was quickly put to the test when she was diagnosed with cancer. Although Fran's boyfriend stayed by her side through her illness, the strain was too much for their relationship and they split.
However, something good came from the relationship. An idea. Fran realized that there were no shows on television that explored the older woman/younger man scenario, and soon set about putting a new show, initially  titled "Shacking Up" together.
The show found a home on the WB network and the name was changed to "Living With Fran".
While the show has suffered from some critical setbacks, Fran continues, as does her fans to support and promote the show. It's fate is as of yet, uncertain.
In an appearance Fran made on the Martha Stewart show Martha, she revealed that her beloved mother Sylvia had been hospitalized for an undisclosed illness and that Fran would be moving back to New York.
Whatever the future has in store for Fran, she has shown that she can handle just about anything. She has been through it all, and come out the otherside. She now speaks for those who cannot speak for themselves and continues to entertain millions with her own unique blend of beauty, talent and humor..
