Vala Snowthorn | ||||||||||||
Back | ||||||||||||
Her mother was an elf named Lossewen, who lived in the forests of Linden. By chance or fate she happened to meet and fall in love with a human, Myrdin Snowthorn, a warrior. Their match was not well greeted by her family who believed him too low for her, and feared the effect his inevitable death would have upon her. His family thought the elves too arrogant, self righteous, and that their son would be made to feel like an inferior, his brother Mervyn, was especially stubborn. But still they were handfasted, Myrdin left Avalon to live with the elves, and the family’s resentment was quelled by the birth of two children, Vala, a girl and Mercia, a boy. Though part human, Vala’s elven heritage was more apparent than her brother’s. But neither was made to feel inferior. Mercia in fact revelled in his human heritage; he was concerned only with the fighting style of his human ancestors. Vala on the other hand trained twice as hard in order to keep up with her elfin kin, soon she certain skills of an elf, such as stealth, discipline, and foresight. But with human characteristic mixed in such as a sense of honour, loyalty, and humour. She preferred weapons such as the sword to the bow, and often liked to sit and watch the Elven armourers. But disaster struck when her father was called to arms, his brother was sent to collect him from his elfin home. He went without complaint. Though he had left, it was still his homeland. Lossewen begged him to stay, she told him every time she closed her eyes she saw his death. Sadly her fears were proven to be true. He was stabbed in the back by an orc as he fought to protect his dying friend. Further insult was made when he took his armour, as a prize of war. Mervyn brought Myrdin’s body back to Linden Forest. Lossewen was overcome by grief. But Mervyn had also come to collect Mercia, it was a son’s right to avenge his father, so he was to join his father’s faction. The girl in his eyes was too much of an elf, and not enough of a human, to warrant concern. He refused her demand to come as well. Consumed with hatred for both Orc, and her uncle, Vala left the forest. It was her right, as much as Mercia’s to avenge her father’s spineless killer. She vowed she could not return until justice had been dealt. So she set off to search the land for an Orc in human armour, her father’s armour. When she found as small party of fighters, being set upon by Drow. Though, it was not her fight she decided to help them. Certain Drow after all were allies with the Orc’s, and though she knew not why, she felt a certain empathy with this band of humans, and elves. The Drow were defeated, they fled the scene, leaving behind the wounded. It was then she discovered the identity of the band, they were the order of Nemesis. |
