Canadian Boating Regulations

This site only includes brief descriptions of The Canadian Boating Regulations. All operators of pleasure crafts in Canadian Waters must hold a valid boating certificate.

These regulations pertain to boating, canoeing, waterskiing, personal watercraft ie: jetski's etc.

Information you Must know before (boating, canoeing, small vessels, large vessels on Canadian Waters
non-compliance with the following information will result in fines/penalties and a criminal record. All regulations fall under the Canada Shipping Act, Contraventions Act, Boating Restrictions Regulations, Criminal Code of Canada, Charts and Nautical Publications Regulations, Collision Regulations, and the Small Vessel Regulations

1.       All fines will go to the operator of the pleasure craft not to the occupants
          of the vessel.
2.       There must be a life jacket for each occupant of the pleasure craft.  Must be
          approved only by Dept. of Transport Canada. US coast guard approved life
          jackets etc.  are not acceptable and you can get fined. You can wear your
          other life jackets but there must be a Dept. of Transport Canada lifejacket
         on board for every occupant.
3.      You must have the required carriage requirements for the type of pleasure
         craft  you are operating
4.      You must have the  proper Life Jackets and PFD's. Note all PFD's that have
         been altered, torn or repaired become void.
5.      The operator must ensure that the pleasure craft has the proper equipment
         ie: Buoyant Heaving lines, Fire Extinguishers, sound signaling devices.
         bailer (proper measurements), etc.
6.      Distress signals depending on water craft.
7.      Proper Navigational Lights
8.      Proper Charts and Maps.
9.      Information on Rendering Assistance
10.    Proper Licencing and Registration of Vessels
11.    Load Capacity Plates
12.   Anchors
13.   Collison Regulations
14.   Speed Restrictions
15.   Shore-line Speed Restrictions
16.   Water  Skiing Activities: Must have a minimum of two people on board plus
        skiier
17.   Pleasure Craft must be maintained: No leaks, check: oil change, battery tests,
        lighting etc.
