Bill He was the one I decided I wasnt going to like from the first moment I saw his pot-bellied form sprawled on the metal folding chair in the church basement. And my decision was reinforced when I heard him speak the grating Southern drawl and the same joke over and over: Ah come from L.ALower Alabama. And they tried to teach me about love and I almost learned except I couldnt love the old man with the red face and the unshaved yellow moustache that looked like an old flaky crescent roll turned upside down. Yet, when we were in the church, with the evening sunlight trickling through stained glass onto the circle of bodies swaying around the alter, the sickness in my stomach crawled along my neck and my arms and into my eyes, and I knew that no one would want to be near me. Except he was the one who pulled me into his embrace when I realized the only cure was to cry, unabashedly, as if I were four years old. And I wasnt repulsed by the sticky warmth of his sweat through the pressed purple striped button down shirt And Id never heard a voice as beautiful as his Southern accent when he said Sometimes all ya need is ta be held And loved.
