Black-Eyed Susan

Black-eyed Susan, what makes you look that way?
What petty jealousies upon your heart prey?
For though your skin is soft and your hair long,
Something in your black eyes is gone.
Compassion has left without a trace,
and jealousy has shadowed your beautiful face.
Your dark eyes grow darker still,
and all around you can't help but feel
the unbreakable barrier put up by your will.
You have been hurt and do not want to try again,
you don't want anything to be how it was then.
And yet when you see
how happy you used to be,
a fire and longing burn in your eyes,
and though you try,
you cannot disguise
that jealousy that grows and thrives.
It doesn't work to try to hid,
so let it all out; scream and cry.
Feelings like this don't do well inside.
They will eat your heart, they will crush your dreams.
They will tear you apart, although by now it seems
that you're already there, already torn.
So don't grieve yourself anymore,
when all you have to do is look around
and see that comfort can be found.
but no, you are not listening to this.
Your eyes glare and I can hear your mind hiss.
Nurse your petty jealousies.
I don't care.
But that's a lie.
Don't be afraid to change your mind and try.
When you do, I'll be there.
