The Home Of My Exa. |
My Exa. Where to start. I originally swapped this car for my old 1985 Mazda 929 coupe that had been fitted with the Jap spec running gear, i.e. 12A Turbo Rotary, close ratio 5 speed and LSD diff with independant rear suspension. The Exa was in top nick with only 1 small ding, and it was absolutley stock exept for the turbo which was an exchange item that had been hi-flowed. It also had new CV's and a reco gearbox. Since owning it I've customised the inside a bit with a Pioneer DEH-4045 CD head unit, Pioneer Bullet Splits and a pair of 12" subs in a customised box in the boot floor. The subs are powered by an Avante Garde Competition Series amp that had been bridged from 4 into 2 channels and loaded down to 2 ohms. I have also added the Auto Technica Wheel, gear shift boot and gear knob, and have a set of Race style seats to go in. Under the bonnet has remained almost the way it was exept I've re-run the inlet tract to remove about 2 metres of piping, resulting in less turbo lag, and now the air flow meter sits right off the front of the turbo inlet, resulting in a much sharper throttle. I've also added a finer filter sock, and some cold air duct. It looks ugly but is rather effective. I have a blow off vavle from an S14 200SX and a small intercooler to go on yet, and I'm planning on doing some inlet porting and adding an RB30 throttle body soon, it will be interesting to see the difference these mods make. On the outside I have removed the large poxy yellow side indicators and grafted on a smaller pair of clear ones off a wasted Holden Astra. I've put on a set of small but very powerful driving lights, because the Kangaroos around where I live are pretty big, and I DON'T wanna see how much one of them can mess up my car. I got a set of 15" S13 Silvia alloys from a nice bloke near the Gold Coast when I was up there on one of the car club cruises for $100. These and a set of high quality low profile tyres made a big improvement to the cars handling, and it's still stock. I have a set of lowered progressive rate King Springs to go in yet, can't wait for that! I'd really like to get it painted, but I really can't justify the cash at the moment because it's really not in that bad shape, just the few small car park dents really piss me off. All in all, I'm pretty happy with this car, it's quick, good on fuel and ultra reliable. Considering it's age, and the low-tech running gear in it, it's surprisingly quick and I've been able to do all the services and mods to it myself. It's also surprising how well it responds to small cheap mods, it's really easy to get more power out of it, and given another year, I'll have it handling like a circuit racer! |
The Exa has gone! There was a Mazda Cosmo very much like the one that I swapped for the Exa kicking around town, so I offered to swap cars and was taken up on my offer. The Cosmo need a fair amount of work, but it is pretty unique and I am more than happy to spend the next few years working on getting it up to scratch. I'm a little pissed off at the guy who had my Exa, he proceded to drive it into the ground. To the point, in fact, that he sold it as a wreck and a bloke with an ET bought it and used the pop up headlight front on his ET. So it's still getting around, just half of it on one car and the other half on another See the Cosmo HERE..... Now, back to the original story: |
