Edinburgh Castle Pictorial Tour
This photo of Edinburgh Castle was taken from Princes Street near the Scott Monument.
Castle Entrance
Having walked through the entrance, the road turns to the right and up towards the Posrtcullis gate. Notice the bottleneck which forced attacking troops to stop in their tracks and become easy targets for the soldiers on the battlements. Top left you can just see a cannon poking out, it was from here that the cannon pic below was taken.
Left, is a look back at the portcullis gate. The stairs to the right of the pic are called "The Lang Stairs". Turning back round we proceed up a road that bends to the left and as we look up to the left we see the turret in the pic on the right.
The road continues to bend round to the left and we find gate 7, the last gate before entering the inner castle. Through the gate to the left is the Turret. The large building on the right is the Memorial Chapel, it's right frontage forming the top of the inner square.
A view from the turret towards the barracks and where the turret pic was taken. The road goes down to the right towards the portcullis and round to the left towards Gate7.
A view of the Memorial Chapel from the inner square. The left end of the Chapel is the building that can be seen from outside gate7.
Panning right we find the Royal Palace built in 1566. This is the building where the Scottish Crown Jewels are kept. Unfortunately no photography allowed and guards to enforce it!
A view of Edinburgh over one of the cannon positioned above the entrance road to the portcullis.
St Giles Cathedral which is located about halfway up the Royal Mile which leads to the Castle. If you could enlarge and enhance the cannon pic to the right you would be able to see the very top of the Cathedral, for now you'l just need to take my word for it!
Two pics of the Walter Scott Monument on Princes Street taken from halfway up Market Street which leads to the upper part of the Royal Mile. The very top pic of the Castle was taken from a position about 200 yards to the left of the Monument as we look at it.
Hope you enjoyed this short tour and the page didn't take too long to download! Namaste, Alan.
