From 21 June, 1990 to Present Day 2001

The years which defined the CD soundtracks of the Neo·Geo's music. Like SNK itself, the Scitron releases have come to an end. Or at least they seemed to have, though after a lengthy delay, Scitron's Arcade series of original soundtracks has finally been resurrected with the release of Sengoku Densyou 2001's OST. So, like SNK, as we would later find out, Neo soundtracks will be around for at least a little while longer. I dedicate the music portion of my site to SNK's "New World Orchestra," the ADK Sound Factory, the sound dept.s of all Neo companies like Visco, Video System, Data East, Saurus and the rest of them, for all these years of supremely wonderful tracks, and to Pony Canyon's Scitron label for all their encompassing, well-priced releases, plus all those extra little gifts inside. It was a true pleasure to have bought your products, and still is!

The Lists

So what's out there? Generally an original soundtrack (OST) and for many games, and arranged soundtrack (AST). Some fighters have drama CD's which are filled with character dialogues, or are radio dramas, as well as the Media Works (MWCG-) drama CD's. There are some special edition/concert and anniversary CD's, periodically a promo CD and a few CD singles. In some cases, moreso with older releases, soundtracks of two or more games were doubled up onto the same CD, or both the original & arranged versions are found on the one disc, as indicated by the "Origin" column.

Does an OST exist for every game? Unfortunately no. So far, about nine months after starting the list I have come across but one soundtrack for an MVS-only game, and nothing for other titles like Metal Slug, Ninja Commando & Crossed Swords II which did make it home. The only other discs I can think of that I do not have listed are entries from the Gamest CD line, which am no longer working on.

What is included with a typical Scitron sountrack CD? Of course the dics, booklet case and obi strip/spine card are givens, but Scitron had a long-running present campaign. A customer questionnaire card is always present (these became commonly known as "warranty cards" thanks to a certainl maleficent individual) and quite often a sticker sheet was included as well. Most of the time, the booklet's cover image would also grace the sticker, but not always. Just look at Iron Clad (Choutetsu Brikin'ger); one amongst many. Likely the second most common present, were cassette indexes: little cards decorated on one side, lined on the other, for use with cassette tape cases, or did you guess that from their name? Another freebie, generally confined to fighting game soundtracks, were instruction cards. Take a look at 3 Count Bout (Fire Suplex) in the club listed below. While these cards had little more to offer than the instruction booklet/MVS stickers, they can, at least in one instance (World Heroes 2) offer the full moves list for the characters, including the hidden moves of early 90's popularity. Large musical scores of one track in the game began to be included as the omake (bonus gift) in later releases, as opposed to the typical inclusion of such within the booklet (cheapskates?). In unique cases, more than one present is included with the CD, the most eye-cathcing example I have seen being the Garou Densetsu Image Album, complete with the normal stuff, an outer paper box and a whole sticker book full of great stuff. There are also odd inclusions such as mini posters, iron-on transfers and what else I can't imagine. Sadly, not every disc has these bonus items, although, as was mentioned, most do. Finally, many older soundtracks which antedated the advent of automatic image albums or arranged soundtracks as they were later known, would include one arranged track, of a random song in the game.

Special note: For anyone looking to (special) order soundtracks, keep in mind the following. Each and every one of these CD's remain(ed) in print for exactly two years. Let's take The King of Fighters best arrange collecion, which was released 2000.06.21. Two years from then 2002.06.20 the CD will officially go out of print.

As of right now, one will find no anime soundtracks related to the 8 Man or BomberMan anime's documented on the lists. The series either cover too much ground or are too difficult/obscure for me to research and thus include them here. The same can be said for dear little Maruko-chan.

And always remember, any corrections are welcome, as are scans and pictures of the CD's.

Plan B

For any who don't know, NEO·GEO CD games are redbook audio CD's, meaning they can be played in a standard CD player in lieu of the actual soundtrack once you skip track 1. From my extremely limited experience in doing so, I have discovered that the tracks typically play for around two~two-and-a-half minutes and I'm really not sure what the case is with regards to the Voice & S.E. Collection. In any case, there is one main consideration to take into account. While you would obviously be missing out on the general attractions of a proper CD release, many NGCDs have arranged music, not original. Below is a work in progress of which NGCD games employ arranged music, original, and those for which we're either unsure or have yet to determine. Last updated 05/10/2002.

All the cover scans are directly accessable through the club, along with images of complete soundtrack sets where possible.

For the purpose of offering actual opinion instead of fact, I have created a Yahoo! club called The Neo·Geo Music Factory, to focus on discussions of the CD's. Here I can offer some hints when hunting for CD's, from my own experiences alert you about which ones have deceptively short tracks, poor sound quality, praise the must-buys, speak on price + rarity and so on. This club will also serve as a place to buy, sell and trade any Neo soundtracks you have or are searching for. As well, I welcome discussions of the video and LD releases in the club. Don't forget to stop by!
