What is Role Playing? The essence behind role playing is taking on a fictional identity. Role playing can take on many forms: Cops and Robbers (or Tea Party), acting, and even thinking out a "what if?" thought. Role playing games, on the other hand, are a popular form of role playing. It's a more sophisticated form of "Cops and Robbers." It is best described, in my opinion, similar to writing a book where there are main characters, plots and subplots, and a whole world to explore. But Role Playing games are more like the traditional storytelling with the twist that the listeners participate and make a difference in the story being told.
What is GURPS? GURPS is the popular acranum for "Generic Universal Roleplaying System." The name started out as a joke, but the makers decided to keep it. It is a book of guidelines and ideas to help get a roleplaying game up and going. I like it because of its easy-to-understand rules and reality-based system which allows for any type of game to be made. If you are interested, you can download a very basic version of GURPS, called GURPS Lite, at Steve Jackson Games' web page. If you already know all about GURPS, you probably just want to see what I have on my page.
