Which gear to use. Selecting the correct gear ratio is relatively simple; The car should achieve maximum speed at the end of the longest straight, just before you start breaking. This way you get maximum acceleration without over-revving the motor. However, sometimes it may be benficial to slightly over or undergear the car. For example, if a track has lots of short straights, gearing the car lower may yield a faster lap-time since the time gained coming out of the corners may outweight any time lost on the short straights. Also if the grip level is low, over-gearing the car makes it less likely to wheelspin, making the car more driveable. Calculating your final drive ratio. It is very useful to be able to compare your gearing with another driver, so you can see if you've geared it 'right' or not. However, this is only possible once you have calculated your final drive ratio. To do this, you need to know three things; 1. The internal gearbox ratio of your car 2. The number of teeth on your pinion gear and 3. The number of teeth on your spur gear. |
