MORGAN'S RATING | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
![]() |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Set against the setting of the raid on Pearl Harbor, this is the tale of two friends; one an aviator in the U.S. Army Air Corps (Hartnett), and the other (Affleck) in the British Royal Air Force (American pilots were recruited by them before the U.S. entered WWII); who find themselves in love with the same woman. It's worth stating that the emphasis on the film is said to really be on the love stories; with history the amazing and tragic backdrop.

QUOTES | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Admiral Yamamoto: I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant.
FACTS | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Danny Walker: I think World War II just started.
RELEASE DATE: May 25th, 2001 (USA) DVD RELEASE DATE: December 4th, 2001 (USA) BOX OFFICE OPENING: $59.0 million (USA) BOX OFFICE RESULT: $198.5 million (USA) BUDGET: $152.7 million (USA) SHOOTING DATES: April 2000 -- September 2000 - The USS Missouri (BB63) portrays the USS West Virginia. - Before shooting began in Pearl Harbor, a Hawaiian priest blessed the crew -- required by law for film crews shooting in Hawaii. - Filmed in "3-strip Technicolor," the same color process used for The Wizard of Oz and Gone with the Wind. - Scenes in Tennessee farmland were shot an hour outside Los Angeles in Somas, California. For the look of Tennessee, corn was planted five months prior to shooting. - The fictional character of Thurman represents an actual team of military codebreakers that deciphered Japanese transmissions days before the attack. - Alec Baldwin spent time in flight simulators at Fort Rucker, Alabama to prepare for his role. - To simulate the USS Oklahoma capsizing, crews constructed the world's largest gimbal. - Both Ben Affleck's grandfathers were in WWII. Josh Hartnett's great uncle fought on D-Day, and James King's cousin died at Pearl Harbor. - Women's feet were smaller in the 1940's, so costume houses from NYC to Italy were enlisted to produce period shoes in sizes of 10 and 11. - It took 8 weeks for crews to build the USS Oklahoma. During the capsizing sequence, there were 150 men hanging on or falling off. - Filming of the bombing sequence was overseen by the Environmental Protection Agency. - The crew used 700 sticks of dynamite, 2,000 feet of primer cord and 4,000 gallons of gasoline to ignite the six ships. - Nominated for three 2002 Academy Awards for: Best Sound, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. - Nominated for six 2002 Razzie Awards for: Worst Picture, Worst Actor (Ben Affleck), Worst Screen Couple, Worst Remake or Sequel, Worst Director (Michael Bay) and Worst Screenplay. |
