Policemen have always been the idols of Freddy Heflin. Due to being slightly deaf, Heflin could never pass the physical to become a police officer himself. However, because of his friendly, amiable nature, he's managed to get himself elected Sheriff of a small New Jersey county outside of New York City, and resides where many NYPD officers also dwell. Mo Tilden is an Internal Affairs investigator for the NYPD, and his investigation of some cooked cops lead him to this small town, and to Sheriff Freddy Heflin. When Heflin begins to help Tilden out in his case, he discovers that some of his heroes may have feet of clay...

QUOTES | |||||||||||||||||||||
Joey Randone: What the fuck, Ray? You said PDA was gonna set this guy up, with a new life and everything. Ray Donland: You think I'm all that, huh, Joey? |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Moe Tilden: See sherrif, I got a sticky problem. My jurisdiction ends, in a sense, at the George Washington Bridge. But half the men I watch live beyond that bridge, where no one's watching. Freddy Heflin: I'm watching. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Ray Donlan: See officer, in Garrison, when the car you're gonna tag has got a PDA sticker, I'd advise you to think to yourself, "Hey, that's one of the good guys. I think I'll go catch me a bad guy." Deputy Cindy Betts: If we didn't pull over P.D., there wouldn't be any violations in this town. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Freddy Heflin: How do you think this makes me look. Ray Donlan: Go home and don't think so much. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Freddy Heflin: I look at this town, and I don't like what I see.
FACTS | |||||||||||||||||||||
Moe Tilden: What you've got here, sherrif, is a town that scares the shit outta certain people.
RELEASE DATE: August 15th, 1997 (USA) DVD RELEASE DATE: June 1st, 2004 (USA) BOX OFFICE OPENING: $13.5 million (USA) BOX OFFICE RESULT: $44.8 million (USA) BUDGET: $15 million (USA) - Sylvester Stallone gained 40 pounds to add realism to his portrayal of Heflin. He also was only paid SAG minimum wages. By the time that reshoots were required, he had lost weight again. Stallone gained the necessary weight for the role by eating a steady diet of giant pancakes served at a local pancake house. - Peter Berg plays Officer Randone. In Very Bad Things (1998), directed by Berg, the same character appears, played by Steve Fitchpatrick. - At the end of the film, when Freddy and Ray are bringing in Murray Babitch to the NYC authorities, there is one shot of Moe Tilden coming out of a building. In this one shot, his mustache is noticeably longer. Director James Mangold wanted to get a shot of Robert De Niro's character walking out of the building. De Niro had already completed his scenes and was already working on another film, Jackie Brown (1997). De Niro agreed to return and appear in the shot, but could not trim his loner mustache as it was required for his character in that film. - Many of the cast subsequently appeared in "The Sopranos", which is also set in New Jersey. - Father William Kalaidjian, who presided at outdoor funeral set, was an NYPD chaplain for many years and now ministers to veterans through the Bronx VA hospital. |

Ray Donlan: What brings you to our fair city? Moe Tilden: I heard there was a way of life out here. Thought I'd check it out for myself. Ray Donlan: What are we, like the Amish now? |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Gary Figgis: I don't give a shit about your fucking justice. Being right is not a bulletproof vest, Freddy.
Moe Tilden: I gave you a chance to be a cop and you blew it.
Liz Randone: Why is it that you never got married Freddy? Freddy Heflin: All the best girls were taken. |
|||||||||||||||||||||
Figgs: Look Freddy, I say it's okay to be jealous. You save this girl's life, right? From it, from risking yourself, from saving her sorry ass, you do deaf as a result. Freddy Heflin: In one ear. Figgs: In one ear. Then you have to watch this girl you saved, this beauty queen, marries this cocksucker. |

"A knock-your-socks-off thriller." -- CNN
"Dazzling...a film that, to say quite a lot, is as good as its cast." -- Janet Maslin, The New York Times
