Zora Banks is a school teacher and aspiring singer hoping to become a successful star while taking a break from heartache. Franklin Swift is a down-on-his-luck construction worker and not-quite divorced father of two hoping to start his own business. The two meet and fall in love and during the course of the stormy relationship, they both come to some startling conclusions about love and each other.

- Author Terry McMillan was offered more money to make the film as a theatrical release but opted to work with HBO in order to be given the freedom to see her vision come to life.
Terry McMillan is also the author of
Waiting to Exhale (in which Snipes also appeared) and How Stella Got Her Groove Back, both of which were turned into very successful films.
- Leonard Welch, the father of a child with McMillan, sued in 1990, claiming that the character of Franklin was based on him except he was mean-spirited and libelous.
- Among the songs used in the film are tracks by the Isley Brothers, Curtis Mayfield, Donna Hathaway, Nina Simone, and Chris Khan.
