BIOGRAPHY
Highly intelligent and extremely well educated -- earning an MA at Stockholm's Royal Institute of Technology and a Fulbright Fellowship at MIT -- Dolph Lundgren is better known for his athletic achievements than his intellectual pursuits. An internationally recognized kick-boxing champion, the 6'6," 250-pound Lundgren was working as a doorman at a trendy New York disco when his personally produced exercise video Maximum Potential caught the eye of movie producers. His cinematic debut was a bit part in the James Bond opus A View to a Kill (1985) which co-starred Lundgren's then-lover Grace Jones. His breakthrough film role was Drago, the automation-like Russian ring opponent of Sylvester Stallone in Rocky IV (1985).
The content of Lundgren's subsequent films is implicit in their titles: 1987's
Masters of the Universe (in which he played bulging-biceped cartoon character He-Man), 1991's Showdown in Little Tokyo (which paired him up with the late Brandon Lee) and Universal Soldier (wherin Lundgren shared the screen with fellow bodybuilder Jean-Claude Van Damme). However unlike other 80s action stars like Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lundgren's films mostly skipped theatrical releases and debuted on either cable or video. Nevertheless, he still managed to achieve similar success on the small screen. His last theatrical role was the 1995 Keanu Reeves thriller Johnny Mnemonic (1995), in which Lundgren had a supporting role as a villian named the Street Preacher.
