Evelyn Gill , born on the Texas Gulf Coast in Baytown, Texas, grew up enjoying the beach & Gulf. She learned an appreciation of art from her mother, Charlene Gill, & took every art course she could in school. While attending Sam Houston State University, she attended an art field school in Pueblo, MX for a summer. She graduated from Sam Houston State University with a degree in Art and Education, then married Bob Hilton, an Education major from Simonton, Texas. After Bob received his MEd, they taught in several school districtsthen moved with their 3 children, Steven, Suzanne & David, to Alpine, in West Texas, where Evelyn received a Master's of Art at Sul Ross State University. She taught special education reading and art there & in Pecos, Texas for 26 years while enjoying and absorbing the western Anglo, Indian, & Hispanic cultures. This played a strong role in influencing much of her later work. While at Sul Ross, she studied Spanish missions & Indian pottery of the Big Bend area and worked in several area archeological digs. She developed an acute interest and knowledge in southwest pottery and wrote a book, Ancient Indian Pottery of the Transpecos(published by the El Paso Archeological Society). In it, are many of her drawings of ancient vessels unearthed in the digs and displayed in the Sul Ross Historical Museum. Evelyn and Bob discovered 49 shard & piece them together into one of the largest pieces of pottery every found in this Rio Grande area--an El Paso polychrome Olla (diameter 2'6"), dating back to the 1500's. The influence can be seen in many of Evelyn's watercolors. Today, Evelyn & Bob are retired & live on northern edge of the Texas Hill Country (known for it's annual array of Bluebonnets) near the town of Brownwood. She enjoys her family (especially her grandchildren, Trent & Josh) and spends much of her time as a professional artist. Every year she and her husband scatter bluebonnet & other wildflower seeds in the fields around their home and enjoy the profusion of birds and flowers. "After God, family and friends, I love Texas' diverse scenes and like sharing them with everyone through my paintings. Its heritage and beauty make it truly "God's Country" & a colorful, vibrant part of America!" |
