Elizabeth Inchbald was born in 1753, yet still considered to be part of the restoration movement of drama as they were few female playwrights preceding her lifetime and her style was similar. Inbachld was born in Suffolk, England and left for London at the age of 18. Shortly after arriving in London she met Joseph Inchbald (a professional actor) and married the then 36 year old. Together they toured Whales and Scotland performing in a theatrical company. Inchbald made her first acting appearance in London at Covent Garden in 1780. Between 1780 and 1785 Inchbald also became a writer. It is believed that she began writing intially to financially survive her widowhood. Inchbald completed 21 plays in her lifetime ( some adapted and some original). Her most prominent piece of work appears to be her novel A SimpleStory. Elizabeth Inchbald also became one of the first prominent British female critics. |
