Day 40: There seems to be no end in sight. Where do they get the reserves? We are almost dead. We can't last long, two more days at the most.
Day 45: Today we repelled yet another breach. We are at the inner wall now; they own the courtyard and the outer walls. But we still have hope. They seem as weary as we. They cannot hope to take us now.
Day 46: I have discovered why they fought so hard. The Spinehill dwarves have overrun our border with them from the west, a new, fresh army. Their berserkers and axe men drowned out the wind with their drums. I now know we are dead. My people know it too. But we will not surrender. You will find no arrow in our backs. FOR CRIMSON HAVEN!
Day 50: My love, I am dictating this as I am being carried from the wall. They have broken in. We are doomed. My love, if this gets to you, know that we did not cower. We did not run. You may be happy to know that I fought well my love. I was at my best. How I wish you could have seen me. My people gave up nothing easy. I saw those pulling spears from their own bodies to defend a wagon, a home, a loved one, or a mount. Every inch of land was defended. Every victory for them cost a dozen of their troops. I only wish I knew why they attacked. I only wish I knew who my enemy was. My love, I am dying. My blood will feed the land for years to come. Know that I loved you at the end. Know that my final words to those around me were of you. I want you to know that I died in the tower of our castle. Where we were to raise our family next year. So much is lost. So much more than I can say died with me today: hopes for our future and our children. But I die knowing one thing. They will say our castle was man's greatest achievement, and that what it represents will stand forever. |
