Ilúvatar (God), also known as Eru to the Elves, created the Ainur, or the Divine Powers.  Ilúvatar taught the Ainur his wisdom and they created music.  Melkor, the most powerful of the Ainur, diverged from the will of Ilúvatar and created his own harmony in the music.  Ilúvatar, after putting down the discord of Melkor, gave to the Ainur the vision of Arda (Ëa), the world that is.  The Ainur that became enamored with the vision of Arda were given the chance by Ilúvatar to live permanently in Arda.  When the Ainur came to Arda, they found nothingness.  It was their responsibility to create the vision shown to them to prepare for the coming of the Children of Ilúvatar.  The Children of Ilúvatar included the Firstborn and the Followers, Elves and Men.  The Ainur loved them and their history.  Melkor desired to rule the realm of Arda, but was defeated by Manwë, his brother, and the rest of the Valar.  The desire for Arda never left Melkor.
