| Men are the Second Born and the Followers of the Children of Ilúvatar. They were gifted with mortality, to seek existance beyond the world. Men were also given the gift to shape thier lives as they wished, for they were not bound to the fate of the Music of the Ainur, which governed the fate of the world. They were most like Melkor of all the Valar, which became a grief to Manwë. Melkor cast his | |||||||||||||||||||

| shadow on the gift of Men, so that death was feared among them. At the end of the world, Men shall join in the second Music of the Ainur in the end of days. They awoke in the first age after the coming of the Elves. Men were first discovered by the Elf King, Finrod Felagund, who had heard them singing. Taking his harp, Finrod sang to the men songs of Valinor. The Men looked at him in wonder and soon befriended him. Finrod then learned that the Men had once lived in the east, but after the shadow of Morgoth fell, they fled to the west. There they heard rumors of the light of the Elves and the strength of the Eldar. The three houses of Men were: the house of Bëor, the house of Marach, and the house of Haladin. They quickly befriended the Elves and aided them with thier war against Morgoth. In the First Age, the life span of Men were very long (about 900 years). Thier life span, however, soon began to dwindle. After the victory against Morgoth, the Valar granted the Men of Númenor thrice their normal life span. Those who did not come to Númenor were the Lesser Men. They have a life span similar to ours. |
