| When the Valar came to Arda, the world, they created many great works, such as the airs, waters, mountains, trees, and stars. Melkor, known as Morgoth to the Elves, grew jealous of the Valar and thier works. He then destroyed many of thier labors in Middle-earth. Therefore, the Valar preserved many of thier beautiful works in the haven of Valinor that was yet unmarred by the evil of Melkor. In the paradise of Valinor, the Vala Yavanna sang a great song of power and created the | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Two Trees of Valinor, the most famous of her works. The trees were Laurelin the Gold and Telperion the White. The light of these trees lit Valinor and at thier creation began the counting of time when the gold and silver lights combined. As Ilúvatar foretold, the Elves awoke at Lake Cuiviénen and were discovered by Oromë. To ensure the safety of the Elves, the Valar attacked Morgoth, who dwelt in Angband, and in chains bore him away to Valinor. The Valar invited the Elves to dwell with them in the paradise of Valinor. The Noldor, Vanyar, and some of the Teleri Elves chose to journey to the Blessed Realm with Oromë. Some of the Teleri were sundered from thier kin and remained in Middle-earth and were named the Moriquendi (Elves of Darkness), or the Avari (the Unwilling). Fëanor was one of the most powerful of the Eldar (Elves) with a fiery spirit and a proud will. He was the greatest craftsman of the Noldor and the eldest son of Finwë, High King of the Noldor in Aman (Valinor). He created the three Silmarils, great jewels that held the light of Laurelin and Telperion. The Silmarils were hallowed by Elbereth and made unbreakable. Morgoth, who now dwelt in Valinor under the supervision of the Valar, coveted the Silmarils and thier great beauty. He began to convince the Eldar to distrust the Valar. With Ungoliant, an evil spider that devours light, he plotted to poison the Two Trees and steal the Silmarils. During a festival in Valinor, when everyone was summoned to the halls of Manwë, Morgoth and Ungoliant went under the cover of shadows and carried out thier plans. After they killed Finwë, they escaped to Middle-earth with the Silmarils and came again to Angband. Morgoth would not surrender the Silmarils to Ungoliant, who thirsted for more light. She attacked him but was defeated by Balrogs who came to the aid of Morgoth. The deeds of Morgoth utterly outraged Fëanor, who was determined to gain back what was stolen and avenge his father's death. |
