The Coming of Men
Back
Even as the first rays of sunlight fell upon Middle-earth, the Second Born, Men, awoke.  Long had they abode in the east of Middle-earth, but rumors of the great Elven kngs and the beauty of Beleriand drove them west.  The Men wished to escape from the horrors of Morgoth.  They did not have the strength to fight off their attackers.  Therefore, the Men traveled west in three movements based on their house.  Of the three houses of Men, the house of Bëor was the first to travel west.  Finrod Felagund, the king of Nargothrond, was the first to discover the awakening of Men.  He sang of Valinor to Bëor and his comrades and quickly learned their language.  Bëor and his companions beheld Finrod in awe.  Many of the Men      even assisted the Elves in their war against Morgoth,

The Elves held the deeds of Men in high esteem, for they marveled that Men would give up thier lives in battle so valiantly even though they were mortals.
Morgoth attempted to convert Men to his evil services by convincing them that death, thier gift from Eru, was to be feared.  Morgoth suceeded in perverting many Men into his service.  These Men were the first Easterlings.
The three houses of Men were the House of Bëor, the House of Haladin, and the House Marach.  Most of the people of Bëor fought against Morgoth with the sons of Finarfin.  No man however, could enter Doriath, for the Girdle of Melian kept them out.  The other houses eventually travelled west as well and assisted different Elven kingdoms in thier wars.  More about these houses of Men can be read in the Races of Middle-earth.
Many of the deeds of Men during the Wars of Beleriand were renowned.  Among the greatest of these were the deeds of Barahir, father of Beren.  During an attack, Finrod was surronded by orcs with little hope of escape.  Barahir, risking his own life, came to the aid of Finrod and saved him.  In gratitude, Finrod gave to Barahir the Ring of Barahir, which was made in Valinor.  He also swore to help him and those of his house if ever they needed his aid.  The oath he swore would later be fulfilled to Beren.
