Legacy - The Chin Jab No.1
The Chinjab Technique

What is a Chinjab? The Chinjab is a technique from World War Two Close Combat which is regarded as one of the most effective and safe weapons in a persons Close Quarter arsenal. It was taught as part of the Shanghai Police’s Control and Restraint system  (created and instructed by W.E Fairbairn) which was known as Defendu but really came into it’s own during World War Two Commando Instruction Courses. It is basically a striking technique targeted at the chin area of the opponent with the base or heel of the palm and there are three main variations; the Chin Jab with Claw, Chin Jab without Claw and the Chin Shove (more of a push than a strike). These are just my terms though, all are just variations of the Chin Jab and known by that name.

What I’m going to do is go through the two main types of Chin Jab from two main sources, the Chin jab with Claw (Fairbairn’s Instructions) and the Chin Jab without Claw (Cestari’s Instructions). W.E Fairbairn was a great fan of the Chin Jab with Claw and taught it to all his students, there is great footage of him performing this technique on the OSS training video. The image on the top of this page also shows what a Chin Jab with Claw would look like.

Chin Jab with Claw
               W.E Fairbairn
1. Bend the right arm from the elbow, turning the palm of the hand to the front.
2. Bend the palm of the hand back as far as possible, extending the fingers and the thumb and keep them bent so that in the event of missing your assailant’s chin, they will reach his eyes, should the situation justify such drastic action. The force of this upward blow under the chin does not depend upon the strength of the person applying it, but upon keeping the palm of the hand bent backwards.  This should allow one to deliver a “rock crushing” blow with a follow through from the shoulder and no possibility of hurting one’s own hand when applying it.

The next description is from a man who probably knows more about World War Two Close Combat than any other person not part of the Original WW2 Instructor’s team. He has spent a lifetime researching this field and has taught most of the current group of today’s Instructors and “Master Instructors” – his name is Carl Cestari. *
