BROWNS vs ratbirds, Sunday October 6th, 2002
Why do so many Couch fans insist on believing that other Browns fans 'cheered' when Couch went down in that ratbirds game in 2002?  Before you start formulating your response by pounding away on the keyboard, let me ask you this?:

Last season, if the situation was reversed -- i.e. Holcomb was the status quo starter and Couch was the journeyman backup -- Would you, as a Couch fan, start cheering because Holcomb got injured and had to be taken out?

My belief is that your answer is NO, as it should be!  Why would Holcomb fans be any different?!  (note:  There are ALWAYS bad apples in every crowd, but won't you agree that 99.99% of the people would answer NO above?)

Being at the game, as many of you also were, please bear with me and let me break it down for you.  People, the issue of the fans cheering had everything to do with TIMING!

At precisely the same time when the fans realized that Couch was not getting up from his one-knee down stance after the hit, Holcomb already had his helmet strapped on and was 2-3 yards onto the field talking with Arians discussing strategy.  The fans noticed this also, and started cheering for the most popular guy on the team, the backup QB!  Simply because the cheers occurred when Couch was at his lowest point (literally) in that game was just a matter of coincidence.  Plain and simple.

Now, all you Couch fans can keep your head buried in the sand and ignore this, but that is how it went down.  (Remember, ask yourself the question above before you reply!)

It seems to me that many Couch fans keep their tangled version of what transpired up their sleeve just to have some ammunition (albeit, weak) to lob back at the Holcomb fans when they are pressed.

In fact, when the "Cheering" situation arises when discussing football here in the workplace or while I'm out
and about, I bring the aforementioned point of view up to others and they tend to agree.  Sure it's very easy to sling mud and denigrate others with an opposing view, but people on the whole are a humane sort and when put in the shoes of those that they disagree with, they are apt to see viewpoints they might not have been open to before.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

...thoughts?...

P.S.  I'm gonna pull a Gary Hart and challenge anyone with a tape of that game to check for themselves the timing of the cheers and the appearance of Holcomb talking with Arians on the field.  If it's on film, I guarantee you that Couch was on wounded knee at this precise moment.
