I provide counseling services for men, boys (all ages), and parents raising boys on issues of “anger management”, “conflict resolution”, “intimacy”, and “social skills building”.  Inherent in this process is the enhancement and utilization of an emotional vocabulary from which this population can express themselves more effectively.

Over the years, society has made great strides in revising its ideas about girls and women.  For example, girls and women are strongly encouraged to pursue careers in areas that were traditionally reserved for men.  Today, we find women excelling in areas of business, law, and science.  Unfortunately, in that same time span little has been established in providing boys and men with an opportunity to explore their emotional sides.  Instead, boys and men fall victim to many of the stereotypes that have plague them throughout time.

In my work, I utilize a series of modalities (cognitive, behavioral, and psychodynamic) to help boys and men uncover their true selves.  This includes a re-examination of society’s harmful stereotypes that often plague this population well into adulthood.

Stereotypes such as; “boys are all loud and rude”, “boys are often up to no good”, and “men can’t be sensitive”, are all stereotypes that make up the emotional legacy of our fathers, brothers, and sons.  In truth, these stereotypes are very limiting and don’t depict the true personalities of most boys and men.  In fact, it’s been my experience that boys and men yearn for a stronger connection to their emotional sides.  Moreover, these stereotypes often manifest themselves in the way in which boys and men handle their anger, behave in society, and deal with their emotions.

In working with boys and men in both individual and group settings, I explore the significance of many of these stereotypes and the way in which it has affected them on an emotional and psychological level.  The focus of the treatment is to provide a fostering environment in which issues around anger, emotions, and their social skills can be explored in a manner that is both safe and supportive.

If you are interested in exploring my services, please contact me in confidence by e-mail at suniejoe@hotmail.com.  Please leave a brief message stating the nature of the problem and the best time to reach you.  I will respond in a most expedient manner.
