The sun shone and the wind blew as Mother Nature provided some insight into golf in Ireland or Texas. All 18 holes played into a steady 25 mph wind and there were gusts to 40 mph anytime someone was on the tee. Still, the Barefoot Landing Fazio Course was voted the best of the lot. Scores ballooned to average triple digits and Steve set a new CMGC record for sand shots on a single hole (six, mostly 3 woods into a gale). It looked like golf, but it was a different game in the wind. Preparations for the round differed, but at the end of the day it took a combined effort to win the best ball. Brian and Tom (for the nearly the third straight day) took the cash at even par as sun set on the last full day of MB03. The last day of the overall put Jeff, Steve, Scott B. and Scott K. in the final group. After the pristine beauty of the two Barefoot Landing courses, the west course at Myrtle Beach National earned lower marks (of course the low marks may have been due to the lesson in customer service Patty provided, the omnipresent grounds crew in each landing zone, or the cart paths only policy). Regardless, it turned out to be a perfect day for golf. Despite solid rounds by everyone in the leaders group, no one caught Jeff. John shot an excellent 79, but Jeff extended his streak and finished the event with a four stroke margin of victory. The usual rush to depart ensued: some bought shirts, some fell asleep in back seats, some headed back to the condo for forgotten stuff, hands were shook and off we went. Those that made it out of Myrtle Beach by 1:00 had no problem getting home to a good night's sleep. Here's to another successful year, perhaps our best ever, and a springboard to a successful 2003 golf season. Travel plans have coalesced and the MB03 Roommates have finally been established. The predictable flyers are flying and the predictable drivers are driving and all travel plans appear to be working out nicely. We will be left with three or four vehicles in Myrtle Beach and ample flexibility even for the diverse interests of our large group. The late roster changes added complexity, but there were three finalists for rooming assignments; here is the one that fit everyone's interests the best: As they say, the best laid plans... Anyway, here's how things will go in 2003. The traditional Roommates' Best Ball Tournament will kick things off. Should a roommate team be comprised of only one player, the remaining player has two options. 1, play as a solo with 100% of his course handicap instead of the usual 80% with a chance to win the entire $50 purse, or 2) elect to not pay the $5 entry fee and withdraw from the event. Days two and three will feature a new two man best ball format called Almost Every Man Is A Wild Diamond. In order to best distribute the social interests of everyone involved, the newer guys will be pre-seeded into the draw. Fortunately all of the magic and drama of the Diamond draw will be preserved. The final day will feature a reverse starting order for CMGC members to highlight the 4 day Overall Low Net Tournament. Stay tuned for addition details on the tournament schedule! Here's a breakdown of the courses for Myrtle Beach 2003: Those who have stayed at the Chelsea Condos and dined at the Sea Captain's House know how special it is: a leisurely stroll across Ocean Boulevard, the sting of salt air as the sun rises over the Atlantic, the smell of bacon waiting in the buffet line, the Low Country charm of the matronly hostess, the rich, heavy mass of a bacon and bree omlet. Ahh, I can feel it now! Official MB $JM, $90.00 SB, $87.00 TK, $77.00 JK, $57.00 SH, $52.00 BC, $51.00 NS, $22.00 BH, $11.00 SA, $11.00 SK, $11.00 VR, WD |
