Coming Out Of Their Shells Tour

Rating: 5

OK, first of all, you have to give it to them for their creativity. The music and the storyline is pretty original. Yes, I know at times it was kind of corny, but as I see it this just helps you to get a few more laughs, especially if you're watching this movie at 2 am after eating some candy and drinking two Pepsi's.. anyway. So the story here is that while the turtles are giving their debut concert, the Shredder decides to spoil the fun and use his Deharmonics Conversions Controller to erase all of the music from the face of the planet. Things to look forward to: A song called "No Treaties" which is apparently an anti-peace song, a part where the audience is in an uproar over a New Kids On The Block album, a part where a kid decides to climb up onto the stage, and a part where Donatello's belt comes off. Also, Cam Clarke does the voice of Leonardo in case you're interested (the same person that did Leo in the cartoon.) Things to beware of: April O'Neil's solo and the part where Shredder sings and dances to a song called "I Hate Music"..Don't ask.

Dark Crystal

Rating: 5

A true original. This story came out after many years of contemplation and was created through the ingenious works of the Jim Henson Studio and fantasy artist Brian Froud. A quick synopsis: The Dark Crystal has been chipped and good and evil have been separated. The prophesies tell that Jen, one of the last gelflings must heal the crystal before the conjunction of the tree suns or evil will reign forever. Things to look forward to: The amount of work put into this film is inconceivable; there are no live actors in this movie. If you have the opportunity to do so, rent the version of the film that has a thirty minute behind the scenes segment at the end of the movie so that you can fully understand the effort that was expended to make this film. For more information on the movie check your local library for a book entitled, "The World of the Dark Crystal". There are also a few books by Brian Froud, one of which is entitled, "Good Faeries, Bad Faeries". You can definitely see the influence of Froud's work on this movie in his books. Also note that Brian Froud helped with the character design in another film entitled "Labyrinth".

Labyrinth

Rating: 4

Stars David Bowie and Jennifer Connoley. For the most part, the rest of the cast are muppets. Straight from the imagination and realization of both Jim Henson Studios and fantasy artist Brian Froud, if you've ever wished that you could get rid of your little brother or sister this may just be the film for you. A quick synopsis: Sarah, an average teenage girl who likes fantasy stories decides to wish her little brother Toby away. The Goblin King Jareth agrees to her request. Afterwards, Sarah regrets what she's done and asks to get her brother back. Jareth tells her that if she can get through an impossible labyrinth leading to his castle and find her brother within thirteen hours then he won't turn Toby into a goblin. Things to look forward to: David Bowie's singing and dancing scenes are amusing as heck, the bog of eternal stench should bring a few laughs and the guy under the sidewalk is pretty funny, too. Things to beware of: David Bowie's tight tights (unless you're the CC Pres), Sarah's bratty antics (especially to Jareth) and the sticky sweet corny ending. Note that Brian Froud also helped with character development in another film entitled "The Dark Crystal".

Legend

Rating: 4

This movie stars Tom Cruise, Mia Sara and Tim Curry. If you like science fiction/fantasy films, you'll find enough in this movie to keep you entertained. A quick synopsis of the film: The Dark Lord attempts to take over the world by destroying light forever - something that can only be accomplished by slaying the two unicorns that protect the lands. A forest child, Jack, is the one destined to stop the Dark Lord from accomplishing this task. A long journey through an intricate labyrinth of adventurous settings leads up to the final confrontation. Think Jim Henson meets JRR Tolkien. Things to look forward to: Tim Curry plays one hell of a devil in this movie. Very cool scene with Lily where she becomes possessed by a black dress during an enchanting dance. Things to watch out for: You may notice that the storyline/dialogue is rather jumbled up. The movie was originally going to be much longer, but for some reason they decided to cut a lot out of it. Some video versions contain more of the original film than others. Also, about three quarters of the way through filming this movie, the intricate set burned down so some scenes are shot with a backdrop. Lastly, if you like Tom Cruise, you'll probably like this film because he is extremely young in it.

Lord Of The Rings:Fellowship of the Ring

Rating: 5

This movie is perfection with the small flaw of ending kind of suddenly. Stars include Elijah Wood as the hobbit Frodo Baggins, Ian McKellan as Gandalf the wizard and Orlando Bloom as Legolas the elven archer. For those of you who haven't read the LOTR books - they are a little wordy and draggy - I strongly suggest renting the LOTR animated video first because that was you won't be completely lost during the live action version. A quick synopsis for you: After years of lying dormant, an evil ring awakens to call an army of diabolical forces to destroy the world. Frodo Baggins, a goodhearted hobbit, is chosen to take the Ring to the fires within the castle where the Ring was forged to destroy it - a journey that is nearly impossible. To aid him with his quest he is joined by eight companions, and together they make up The Fellowship of the Ring. Things to look forward to: Excellent effects, scenery, action and musical score. The characters are believable and interact well. Things to watch out for: Again, the end of the movie is completely without resolution, so don't be surprised.

Next Mutation: East Meets West

Rating: 3

And here we have it; the long awaited fourth TMNT movie, and it turns out to be a mess of pieced-together bits from the Next Mutation TV Show. Oh well. No wonder that now they don't want to recognize it as the fourth TMNT movie. Anyway, if you haven't seen the NM show then this movie will be your opportunity to meet Venus de Milo, you lucky person you. Now for those of you who are confused as to why Leonardo is making passes at Venus (and the others as well), you can rest at ease knowing that none of the TMNT are (supposedly) related since they were born and raised on a turtle farm. I could go on to comment on the ludicrousness of that statement but because of lack of time and space I will spare you for now. It's also no wonder why the Mirage company no longer wants to recognize Venus as a Ninja Turtle, or even recognize her existence at all. Also in this movie you will meet the Dragon Lord, a new weird foe to replace the now completely insane Shredder. Dragon Lord has a little sidekick named Wick that looks like a demented character from the Land Before Time - you might find this interesting. If not, there's always the strange new personalities and features (especially the cheesy bandannas) of the TMNT to keep you entertained.

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Rating: 4

Yes, I am aware that you must be willing to watch campy material that pushes the envelope of acceptable family material, but you've got to admit that Tim Curry's legs alone are worth the viewing. Also stars Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon, Meatloaf and Little Nell. A quick synopsis: A rock opera/soap opera stage show set in a glam rock cheesy horror setting. Dr. Frank N. Furter from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania and his minions Magenta, Columbia and Riff Raff attempt to corrupt your average teenagers Brad and Janet while finishing the creation of "The Perfect Man", Rocky. Things to watch for: Riff Raff is played by Richard O'Brien, the man who wrote RHPS. Dr. Furter's tattoo is running down his arm during the swimming pool scene. Things to know: A sequel exists for this movie called "Shock Treatment". Call backs are a must in the land of Rocky Horror and can be found online. RHPS is still playing in most areas, so check with your local theaters to see if and when they run it. Lastly, RHPS is now a broadway musical, The Rocky Horror Show.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Rating: 5

In the mid-eighties, a phenomenon not like any other swept through the country, and while doing so, grew in popularity at an incredible rate. The cause of the craze was the introduction of a new type of superhero, one with an appeal to people of many ages; capable of destroying the greatest forces of evil while downing an entire pizza. There are few who do not at least recognize a connection between the names Raphael, Donatello, Leonardo and Michelangelo besides their obvious historical importance - for they are the names of a fighting force set to promote good at all costs, the names of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! After a classic cartoon show, a live action movie was created that harnessed technology that had not been seen before. Showcases the voices of Brian Tochi as Leo, Robbie Rist as Mikey, Corey Feldman as Donnie and Josh Pias as Raphael. A quick synopsis: After being coated in a chemical ooze, four turtles mutate into humanlike creatures. They are raised by a mutant rat named Splinter and learn to be skilled ninjas like him. They must defeat the evil Shredder, the leader of a band of ninja thieves that plague the city of New York. Things to look forward to: Great humor, awesome ninja action and fight scenes. Shredder is actually kinda evil in this movie. Things to know: Of the voices of the turtles, only Brian Tochi and Robbie Rist are in all three of the TMNT movies.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II

Rating: 5

This is the adventure of the TMNT that gave birth to a new form of entertainment - cheesy rap songs. That alone could justify the five star rating of this film. Yes, if you haven't already seen it, then you are missing out on a lovely segment where Vanilla Ice attempts to sing a not quite classic song, "Ninja Rap". OTher highlights to this movie are a mutant wolf, Rahzar and a mutant snapping turtle, Tokka as an addition to Shredder's team. Also, you'll get to meet Keno, a ninja pizza delivery boy who also played other parts in the TMNT movies as the TMNT characters. You'll also get to see Shredder (who is now a total geek) go flying across the screen, see a WWF Wrestler play the part of Super Shredder and lastly get to hear Adam Carl play the voice of Donatello because Corey Geldman was too busy drug tripping to get involved. Oh yeah, this movie also sparks the new April O'Neil era - Paige Turco, who doesn't look anything like the April from the first movie but for some reason I thought was the same person is now the spunky reporter. Weird. A must see.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III

Rating: 3

Ohhhh boy. Well, that is a somewhat generous rating for this movie. Once again the Turtles change appearances, this time definitely for the worse...unless you happen to be partial to freckles. The plot is weak but the acting is weaker...unless of course you happen to be a Corey Feldman fan, because not only does he return as the gravely voice of Donatello but he also claims to have helped out with some of the humorous lines in the movie. Some of them turned out to be more humorous than intended: "I think I just swallowed a frog...I hope it wasn't an ancestor!" - Donatello. Now for those of you who spent the majority of Biology class in a peaceful slumber, I will inform you that frogs are amphibians and turtles are reptiles. Anyway, throughout the silly journey through "Ancient Feudal Japan" via an antique eggtimer, you'll get to see some dorky Japanese guys in their underwear, a courtship between Mikey and a weirded out Japanese princess and a corny pink light come on during a kissing scene. Be still my beating heart. I bet you just can't wait.

XMEN

Rating: 4

The first in an apparent epic tale, although it hasn't been made clear when the sequel is supposed to debut. Stars Halle Berry, Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellan and Patrick Stewart. A quick synopsis: For some reason, certain people are evolving faster than others and the outcome of this process is that they have strange mutant powers. A hidden school for these outcasts, run by Professor X, becomes the haven of several mutants who ban together to defeat Magneto, a mutant gone bad. Cool effects, pretty good storyline, OK acting makes this worth seeing. Things to look forward to: Wolverine's classic humor, Patrick Stewart playing chess with archenemy McKellan. Things to beware of: Halle Berry's wardrobe.
