Synopsis IJ is a light-hearted feel good series starring Jessica Hsuen, Bowie Lam, Joyce Tang, Michael Tong, and Helena Tam. Jessica grew up in Peng Chau and became blind when she was three. Her parents are really protective of her and always has her best friend Wing Nian taking her to school (she’s a music teacher) and stuff. Jessica meets Bowie who is a Mandarin substitute teacher at the same school. He got burnt out at work and he hates his new boss (Flora’s dad in ATE) who is a dick. Joyce (Bowie’s girlfriend) is a career woman who wants Bowie to be rich and successful so she pushes him to do things he doesn’t really want to do. On Pend Chau, Bowie finds that a simpler life suites him better and he becomes friends with Jessica. Bowie convinces Jessica to move out to Hong Kong so she can experience the city life. Jessica and Wing Nian move into her cousin’s (Helena) apartment in Lan Gwei Fong. At first, Joyce is supportive of Bowie helping Jessica adjusts to city life but soon, she becomes jealous when she sees that Bowie spends all his free time to be with Jessica. Joyce’s best friend, Josie, advises Joyce to get marry with Bowie before its too late. Joyce puts Bowie into a corner by forcing him to marry her but he backs out and break things off with Joyce when he continues to see them having problems. Wing Nian has a crush on Jessica and finally tells her about it but she turns him down gently since she already has feelings for Bowie. The two remain close friends. Meanwhile, Bowie and Jessica grow closer. Bowie’s friend, Michael, is an eye doctor. He sees Jessica as a possible patient for this new eye surgery. Bowie finally convinces Jessica to try the surgery and promises her that he will be the first person she sees. Joyce is feeling down so she drowns herself in sorrow. She calls Bowie to come over. At first, he refuses but she threaten suicide so Bowie goes over to make sure she is ok. She begs Bowie to spend the night with her and he does just to make sure she doesn’t do anything stupid. In the morning, Bowie leaves for the hospital to see Jessica but Joyce threaten to jump so she and Bowie gets into a struggle. Bowie is hit by a car and ends up in a coma. Jessica wakes up and is over joy to be able to see again. She wants to know where Bowie is but no one can find him. Meanwhile, Joyce keeps Bowie’s condition a secret because she doesn’t want Jessica to be with him. Jessica emails Bowie but Joyce, pretending to be Bowie, emails back saying he is away on business and begins to cool things off between the two of them. Bowie wakes up but has speech and mobility problems. Joyce takes time off work to care for him but Bowie keeps her at a distance. Josie finds out about Bowie by following Joyce and promises Joyce that she’ll help out with Joyce’s projects at work. Turns out that Josie wants to take Joyce’s place and proceed to steal all of Joyce’s clients. The two friends are no more. Michael likes Jessica so he starts to pursue her but Jessica’s heart still belongs to Bowie and she doesn’t understand why he’s disappear like that. Michael helps her re-adjust to life with sight and he gets her a job at his clinic. Bowie, thinking that Jessica is with Michael now, doesn’t approach Jessica to let her know of his condition. He slowly gets better and finds work at a café. Jessica, who works in the same building, becomes friends with Bowie not knowing who he is (remember, she has no clue what he looks like). Michael sees Bowie and they talked. Bowie encourages Michael to pursue Jessica since he is no longer “whole”. Needless to say, Joyce lies that she’s pregnant to make Bowie marry her. Just when Bowie is about to tell Jessica the truth, he finds out about the baby and tells Jessica that he’s marrying Joyce. Jessica is shocked but wishes them all the best. Jessica turns Michael down and decides to open her own café. Joyce sees that Bowie still hangs out with Jessica often so she tells Jessica how she feels about it. Jessica promises to distance herself from Bowie. At the wedding rehearsal, Joyce decides to do the right thing. She tells Bowie that there is no baby and she doesn’t want him to marry her because it is the right thing to do. She knows she is wrong and finally realizes it when she sees in his eyes how unhappy he is. Bowie leaves the church to find Jessica. The two gets back together when Jessica’s eyesight begins to fail. She has one last operation but it fails and the series end with Jessica and Bowie waiting for sunrise. Personal note: An okay series. Wanted to hate Joyce’s character for all the bad things she did to keep Jessica and Bowie apart but then again, how can you blame her? She was with this guy for 7 years, expecting to get marry, never really having any problems, only to see this stranger slowly taking her place in Bowie’s life. His parents like her more, her dog likes her more, her boyfriend likes her more! Another problem with this series is that there really wasn’t any chemistry between the main characters. Ratings: $$ |
