She sighed as she raised her eyes to meet her own reflection in the mirror. "This is it.." she said to herself. Justin was finally back home for a few weeks. The tour was over. And she knew it was her last chance to get him back.

She picked up the phone and dialed the familiar number. She remembered dialing it hundreds of times just to hear the comfort of his voice on the end of the line. They would talk for hours into the night about anything and everything. It rang.. once. Twice.

"Hello?" She noticed his voice sounded more ragged than it used to.

"Hey Justin.."

There was a second of silence when she knew he was trying to match a name and a face to her voice. "Hey.. Kristen?"

*Good,* she thought. *He remembers my voice. That's a plus.* She laughed. "Yeah, it's me. Listen, I know you just got home and everything and we haven't seen each other for a while, but would you like to go grab some dinner someplace? I was thinking pizza."

"Sounds good. I'll meet you at the spot in half an hour. You know the one." She swore she could almost hear his smile through the phone.

"Yeah, I know the place. See you in a while." She placed the phone back on the receiver. *Just breathe..* she commanded to herself, as she checked herself over in the mirror once more before grabbing her keys and heading for the door.

She had a while to think on her drive to the restaurant. It had been a long time since she had seen Justin in person. Of course there was the TV and the magazines so she knew what to expect when she saw him again, but she hadn't really gotten to sit down and talk with him for quite a while. She missed that. While he was away, the two most wonderful years of her life, those years spent with him, had kept replaying over and over again in her mind.

Sure, there had been other boys after him.. it's not as if her life ended when her relationship with him did, but no other guys quite measured up after those two years with Justin. And of course now he had Britney. She'd never understand what he saw in her. They were complete opposites, she and Britney, and Kristen would never understand how one guy could be attracted to both of them since they were so unalike.

She arrived early. She requested a booth in the far corner of the restaurant, where they would be seen by the least amount of people, where hopefully they could talk without being disturbed by the ever persistant *Nsync fans.

Justin walked in right on time. She recognized him even with the hat and shades. Of course even if she was blind she'd see him. She waved up to him and he sauntered back to join her in the booth. Taking off his "disguise", he smiled.

It always made her heart skip a beat. The way he'd smile at her, and his eyes would sparkle. It happened again, just like it had two years ago. He had grown up so much, matured quite a bit, but it just made him so much more sexy. "Hey.." she managed to breathe out as he sat down across from her.

He looked at her as though he had never seen her before. Sure she'd grown up and matured a little more too, but as she watched him look her over, she couldn't tell what he was thinking. "I ordered a pizza already.. I hope you don't mind."

"Great," Justin said. "I'm starving. You.. You look really nice Kristen. A sight for sore eyes."

She blushed. "So do you." She sighed, "Gosh Justin.. it's been too long. We should've kept in better touch."

He looked down and toyed with his napkin. "Yeah, I'm kinda sorry about that too. I've missed you. Did you miss me?" he grinned jokingly.

"You have no idea," she said flatly.

That startled him and his eyes shot up to meet hers. Their eyes locked for a moment, which was broken the next when the waiter slid a hot pizza onto the table. Justin hungrily grabbed for three slices.

They laughed and ate together for the next hour and kept talking even after the entire pie was gone. They shared remembered old times and got caught up about what their lives apart for the past two years had been like.

"So," Justin asked, "what made you decide to call me up today?"

Kristen looked up at him, but remained silent. She took a deep breath. "Justin, I think we made a mistake."

Justin shook his head. "I don't. Those years with you were some of the best of my life."

"No, that's just it. I think we made a mistake by ending it, by ending us."

"Oh.." Justin said softly.

"I've really missed you. There have been so many times I wanted to pick up the phone and call you, but I was afraid that you wouldn't ever talk to me again.. or.. or.. you wouldn't even remember me."

Justin was silent. She continued, "I mean, I haven't been completely miserable without you, but I haven't been whole either. Ever since I lost you, it's been like there's something missing from my life, something very important. Other guys have tried to take your place, and I've tried to get over you and let them in, but I can't."

She felt tears brimming along the edges of her eyes, but she forced them back, refusing to cry in front of him. "I know you're with her now, but if I only had one wish for myself it would be to be back with you... for you to hold me in your arms, whisper things in my ear, tickle me on the couch while we're cuddled together... I.. I.." she stuttered, something catching in her throat. "I still love you. I just wanted you to know that. So that's why I called you today."

Justin didn't answer for a few seconds, and the tears slowly began to roll down her cheeks. Justin got up from his seat and moved to the other side of the booth next to her and wrapped his arms around her. She melted into his embrace and silently cried onto his shoulder.

A few minutes later he pulled her back and wiped the tears from her cheeks with his thumb. "Please don't cry Kristen." He pushed a wayward strand of soft brown hair behind her ear. "You're so beautiful.."

He leaned in a placed a small soft kiss on her lips. His lips felt the same as they always had, the hundreds of times he had kissed her before: warm, comforting, inviting. The kiss last only a split second, but it felt like an eternity. "I still love you too," he said softly.

She almost thought she had imagined him saying those words until she opened her eyes and saw his gazing back at her. Staring deep into those pools of blue she knew what he had said was true. "You do?" she whispered.

"Yes, but I'm not ready just to jump back into a relationship with you. Right now I feel like I hardly know you at all, yet I know the deepest parts of your soul. I just think we need to take it slow. There's a lot of things we have to work through, and a lot of other things I have to work out as well before we can be together."

"Her.." Kristen frowned.

"Well, yes, she would be one of them. I truly care for her, but it's nothing like I felt when I was with you. I still have to let her down gently though, because I don't want to hurt her."

"I understand... I can wait," Kristen smiled. "I'd wait forever for you Justin."

"Hopefully, I won't take that long," he smiled, stood, and held out his hand.

She placed her slender hand in his and they walked out together, ready to start anew as friends, destined to become so much more.
