Right from the start, Kouji was a loner, and tended to stick to himself and avoid contact by all means possible, yet he also had a rough side to him, telling the others(they didn't know him at the time) to stay out of the way and let him handle it. He even got on Takuya's nerves, but what are you going to do? Kouji did eventually join up with the others, but he didn't like it and it got off to a bad start. In the battle against Grumblemon(one of many) Lobomon had a great shot at him, but Agunimon got in his way and Lobomon scolded him for that. It was also Kouji who found the first Beast Spirit in KendoGarurumon and used it well enough, but he did have trouble controlling it, much like everyone else apart from Zoe and almost wound up getting killed by going over a cliff with Gigasmon with him. The next time that KendoGarurumon came along was when Takuya first became BurningGreymon and his control problems were even worse than Kouji's, so the two had to fight before destroying everything around them, including each other. The next series of events played out well and Kouji slowly learned to become friends with the others, but he was tested twice, with the second one almost ripping him apart emotionally. When the kids first met Duskmon, he proved to be much too powerful for them, and Kouji suggested a hasty retreat, but Takuya thought if they could combine their attacks, they'd win next time. That plan failed and Kouji had enough. He gave Takuya a piece of his mind telling him that this whole thing wasn't some kind of game and he even asked why he was even in the Digital World to begin with. That leads back to Takuya's problems in the real world. After becoming Beowolfmon, Kouji battled Duskmon and during a power surge between him, he saw a boy was inside Duskmon and he looked just like him. This caused Kouji to pursue Duskmon to find out the truth and he even left the group to find out the truth. Even after a few more battles and seeing Velgemon, Kouji was still determined to find his answers for Ophanimon had often told him that the truth would soon be clear to him. And it would be made cleared to him, for when Duskmon was finally defeated, the boy revealed himself to be Koichi, Kouji's brother. At first Kouji didn't believe it, but Koichi backed it up by mentioning about their mother. Kouji then went into denile for he had no idea on how to be a brother, but Takuya was there to help him deal it, even gave a pep talk of his own. Kouji by this time had now become full friends with the others and he and Takuya teamed up to take on Cherubimon whilst the others tried to free Ophanimon. Beowolfmon and Aldamon were getting the stuffing knocked out of them until with the last of her strength, Ophanimon upgraded their D-Tectors making Kouji able to Unify Evolve into MagnaGarurumon.
