Jared's past is shrouded in mystery. At the age of 15 he was befriended by a kender named Talem Nimbelfingers. Who found him weeping in an old abandoned cottage near the outskirts of the Qualinesti forest. His parents had died of some foul magic or disease that had sucked all the life out if them. When Talen managed to finally relax the young lad two blood covered rings fell from the boys hands to the ground. For a few seconds before Jared finally passed out from exaustion the rings which were lying on the ground in a pool of blood glowed a bright blue and then faded into a light green before they finally dimmed down and the glowing stopped. Shocked and finding himself afraid (an experience few kender ever feel) Talen picked up the heavy and pocketed the rings without a thought. He fled as far as he possibly could with the young (but large) boy on his back.

Talen taught Jared the finer art of 'Borrowing', together they would rob unweary travelers of their coins and jewels. The amazing thing is that not one of the victims were injured. In fact their victims always talk about how 'kind' and 'polite' they were while robbing them, and about the gold rings each wore on their finger. The rings seemed to glow if stared at for more than a few seconds. Obviously the rings have some magic properties, exactly how many is unknown
