Katie Melua
Piece By Piece
Dramatico/SonyBMG

Rating: 35%

Where fellow softly-sung pop jazz Brit superstar Jamie Cullum attempted some steps towards reinvention and a more varied sound on his second album, Katie Melua has eschewed such forward steps.

Instead, Piece By Piece is a very pleasant continuation of Melua’s first album, the successful post-Norah Jones emulation Call Off the Search (as in ‘here’s one ready to market right now’, presumably). It’s all very softly-softly from opener “Shy Boy” onwards – this is an album desperate not to offend.

So there’s no chance of that, then. Instead, Melua sings in her pretty but light tone, while “Halfway Up the Hindu Kush” adds a bit of fan to the mostly sombre sounds of Piece By Piece. And as for the cover of the classic “Blues in the Night”? Well, the less said the better.
