It’s a trick
as old as rock ‘n roll. If you’re a good band who
still can’t quite seem to make the breakthrough
to mainstream success, then there’s always a tried
and true option – a cover.
Giants of Science have upped the
ante though; where previously one single might
have sufficed, this seven-track
appear comes complete with seven of the buggers.
The opening cover of the Eurythmics/Aretha Franklin
hit “Sisters” is a rock beast par excellence, while
the version of Split Enz’s “One Step Ahead” is very
good indeed.
But the most interesting cover
is of a far more direct influence – Giants of Science’s take on Swevedriver’s “Last
Train to Satansville” is delivered with a touch more
rock swagger than the cool detachment of the original,
but there’s simply no keeping down such a great tune.
Similarly, Superchunk’s “The First Part” is more
of a direct influence than fellow Brisbanites the
KT26ers, with Giants of Science’s contemporaries
represented by “Jenny Flex”.
Sparklehorse are probably more
of a band favourite than a direct influence, too,
but the cover of “Happy
Pig” is less reverential than other moments on Sisters.
It’s as such probably one of the best covers on this
EP as it doesn’t actually sound like a ‘cover’ per
se; it comes across as a very different interpretation
to the original. As such, Sisters is more
a curiosity than a necessity – until such a time
as the title cut sets Giants of Science roaring up
the charts, that is.
