Currently, I am researching a total of 250 surnames. That is mine and my husband's families combined. Of which, seventeen are connected to Highland Clans in Scotland. I also have a few lowlander Scots as well. Below is a list of names in my lineage; the Clan; their motto. Research for this was done mostly on tartans.com Clan search. I make no claims to its validity. NAME: CLAN: MOTTO: McClure MacLeod of Harris Hold Fast Mowbray Mowbray By courage, let the deed show West Buchan Not having followed mean pursuits Gardiner/ Gardner Gordon By courage, not cunning Marshall Keith Truth prevails Harvey Keith Truth prevails Simmers Lindsay Endure with strength Comyn Comyn Courage Russell Cumming Courage Cummings Cumming Courage Morgan MacKay Be true, Be valiant Andrews Ross Success nourishes hope Cole (s) ? MacDougall To conquer or die Sanderson MacDonnell Harper Buchanan Brighter the honor hence Robinson Gunn Either peace or war |
My favorite families to research are probably either the Royals, because of all the intrigue, or the Scots. I have 2 novels in the works based upon two different families of mine; one on Johann Jakob Zimmerman, Magister (scientist), who was, by "Biblical standards", a false prophet. Have you read the DaVinci code by Dan Brown? All the rose symbolism in the Priory of Sion? Grandpa Johann had ties to the Rosicrucians; another secretive/religious group using a rose as part of their symbolism. Rosicrucians were a mixture of alchemists, Christian Kabbalists and religious reformers. A lot to delve into there, maybe I'll save that for another page. The other one is about my Cole family...don't get me started!!! This family plays like a movie of the week, or an after-school special on disfunction! Don't get me wrong, I love them all, angels and black sheep as well, but geeze! Soap operas have nothing on them. These two families are neither Royal nor Scot, but they really get my creative ideas going! |
