Freshman confused by Greek system |
EAST LANSING, MICH--Jamal Thompson, a Michigan State freshman, expressed his confusion on the college's Greek system early Friday morning. "I just don't get it," said Thompson who is undecided on a major. "Do these people actually think that they are brothers? What is wrong with them?" |

Thompson also expressed some major concern over the price of joining one. "When I was first approached I thought that it might be a good idea," he said. "I mean the networking and what not might work out well when I want to get a job. And I don't really know anyone on campus, so it's a good way to make friends, but when they told me the price, I was like 'screw that.'" |
Thompson (above) does not understand fraternities like Phi Beta Sigma (Right). He doesn't know why they think they're brothers. |
Thompson compared the frats to being like in high school. "You know, there were certain cliques," he said. "If you were cool enough you were in one. But here it's like, if you have enough money you're cool enough. It's capitalism at it's worst." Although Thompson expressed dislike for fraternities, he thinks sororities are worse. "Man these chicks take it to a new level," he said. "I get scared when I see sorority girls. They are freaky. They are way into that whole 'sister-hood' thing." |

Reportably the up front charges for joining Phi Beta Sigma were over $400. "It's one thing if it guarantees me a job," Thompson said. "But I asked, and there are no guarantees." |
