Local man picks 'major upsets' |
![]() |
ALBANY, N.Y.--Brian Hawkins, a local man, expressed his delight when his second "major upset" team, Southern Illinois, advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tounrament. He also has the Kent State Golden Flashes in the final 16. Hawkins is in a 10-person NCAA pool where each member has to pay five dollars to get in and the winner takes home all $50. |
"When Kent State won, I was honestly shocked," said Hawkins. "I mean, I picked it and all, but I did not think that it would actually come true." Kent State, a 10th seed out of the South bracket, defeated 7th seeded Oklahoma State 69-61 on the first day of competition. They then shocked number two Alabama 71-58 on Saturday. |

"So I thought, I got my major upset of the tourament, but then Southern Illinois won too," said Hawkins. The Salukis defeated Georgia 75-72 on Sunday to advance to next week's games. Tourament ogranizer Joe Morris said despite the upset picks, Hawkins' chances of winning the pool is somewhere around "one in a million." "Look at who he has in the championship," said Morris. "He has Gonzaga losing to Siena. Both of those teams lost in the first round. What was he thinking? I mean Gonzaga was a semi-safe pick. they were sixth in the nation coming into the tournament, but Siena had to play the play-in game even to be here. He is an idiot." "Hindsight is 20/20," said Hawkins of his picks of Siena and Gonzaga. "They were both playing really good ball coming into the tournament. It's about who is hot." Hawkins is currently fourth in the pool, but according to Morris he will soon be in last. "He is fourth because he got some major upsets that no one else has. Now if Southern Illinois gets to the final four like he has, then he will be in business. But they will be running into a roadblock called the University of Connecticut on Friday. Go Huskies!" Morris is a former student of UConn. He was forced to leave after his first semester due to "crappy grades." |
