Good guys are in high demand |
By Susan Pender |
Last week I met a guy. He seemed nice, but I never thought that he could be such a jerk. We decided to go on a date and he bought me flowers. Does he know who I am? I'm Susan Pender damn it! Flowers have repressed women since the beginning of time. They are a symbol of helplessness. They are a symbol of our "slavery" to men. Who were the ones that grew the flowers in gardens? Women. Why? Because we weren't allowed to get a job. We were forced to be in the kitchen or in the garden. So a man goes and picks some flowers out and gives them to a women after she slaved over them? And this is being romantic? Gag me with a spoon. There couldn't be something more insulting out there. It's like giving a black man a swab of cotton during the pre-Civil War era and thinking it was a romantic gift. So I threw the flowers at him, but contuined the date. After all, he was good looking. But then he had the nerve to hold the door open for me. Like I'm so helpless that I can't open it myself? He said he was trying to be a gentelman. Whatever that's supposed to be. Finally the repressor tried to pay the entire bill. Did he think that I didn't work? That I can't support myself because I'm a little defenseless girl? It goes without saying that I dropped him like a Vegan would do with a piece of raw meat. If this taught me anything, it is that good guys are in short demand. But what's the big deal anyway? Marriage is another institution where women are held down. I'm certianly not changing my name and my dad isn't "giving me away." I have to get going though. There's a rally this weekend in Washington about women in TV and I want to get a good sign. Peace. |
