Pudding? is it really a noun?...

If I mentioned the word Pudding to you, you would instantly think about the  yummy yogart-like chocolate desert.  But have you every noticed that the word ends in -ing?   This indicateds that the word would be a verb, but how would it be used it english syntax correctly?  this is an enigma that mankind shall never solve.
