FLOOD CUP

The Flood Cup is the club’s most prestigious tournament. It was named in the memory of Cyril Grosvenor Flood, a noted club member who passed away on September 10, 1978. The cup was first awarded retrospectively to Nev Cobbold in recognition of the fact that he had been the strongest player in 1978 and over previous years. Contest for the Flood Cup first occurred in 1979 and has occurred annually ever since. The Flood Cup is usually run as a 7 round Swiss tournament. Notable exceptions to this have occurred only in 1983 when it was awarded for best performance over several of the club’s tournaments (similar to the present day BAR Trophy), and in 1996 when the tournament was run as a 13 round round-robin. Time controls for the Flood Cup were 40 moves in 100 minutes, followed by 10 moves for each subsequent 20 minutes until 2003. From 2004 onwards time controls have been 80 minutes plus one minute per move from move 1.

STUART WILSON TROPHY

(including the One Hour tournament)

Prior to 1993 a few scratch tournaments had been held with a time control of an hour per player. The trophy for this tournament was donated to the club in 1993 by Stuart Wilson. In 1994 a one hour tournament was not held, so the first contest for this new trophy occurred in 1995. The tournament was commonly known as the “One Hour” for many years due to the fact that each player had 60 minutes in which to make all moves. This changed in 2005 when the time control was amended to 60 minutes plus ten seconds per move from move 1.

45 MINUTE TOURNAMENT

The 45 Minute Tournament started as an informal tournament allowing casual attendees and junior players the chance to play competitively in a senior competition. Since 2003 the 45 Minute has been elevated to the status of a permanent tournament involving all club players. It has been played in group stage format followed by play-offs to determine the top four places. The club has retained the guillotine finish for this tournament, despite now having digital game timers (DGTs), so that players can experience a mix of time controls.

BEST ALL-ROUNDER TROPHY

The Best All-Rounder Trophy is essentially the Club Championship.

Points are awarded to players based on final position in selected club tournaments during the year. The current four tournaments used to calculate the Best All-Rounder are the Flood Cup, the Stuart Wilson Trophy, the Allegro and the Lightning. Until 1998, the Handicap tournament was also included in calculations. The Stuart Wilson Trophy has been part of the Best All-Rounder only since 1996. To be eligible to win a player must participate in a certain number of tournaments. If all tournaments are not held in a year then the trophy is not awarded (such as occurred in 1987, 1990, 1991 and 1993). It should be noted that the 1983 Flood Cup was awarded based a system similar to the present Best All-Rounder Trophy points system.

JOE TARNAWSKI TROPHY

Joe Tarnawski donated this trophy to the club in 1993 and it has been awarded every subsequent year to the player with the best achievement in the combined Allegro and Lightning tournaments. A formula is used to calculate the winner based on the percentage of games won in each tournament. Until 2003 the winner of this trophy had also won the Best All-Rounder Trophy in that year.

MAIDEN TROPHY

The Maiden Trophy is awarded to the player who finishes highest in the tournament for the Stuart Wilson Trophy and has not previously won a club tournament or trophy. The trophy was donated to the club by John Granger. The Maiden event has been run as a separate tournament in its own right in the past, notably in 1986 when there was a 14 player round-robin.

HANDICAP TROPHY

The Handicap Trophy was donated by Doug Foster and is awarded to the player with the highest score in the Flood Cup plus handicap score. A certain number of points is given to each player as a handicap before the start of the tournament, such that each player has an equal chance of winning. In most editions up until 1998 the Handicap was run as a separate tournament in its own right, but fixture congestion stops this occurring now.

THE GAP OPEN

The Gap Open was staged annually from 1980 to 2002. Originally scheduled for October/November, it was run on the Queen’s Birthday Weekend every year from 1983 onwards. Entries were less from 1993 to 2002 mainly because the club staged a separate one day tournament for juniors on the Sunday. In 2001 the junior tournament attracted 35 entries, outdrawing the Open itself. The 2001 Gap Open was run as a repechage event for the Queensland Championship with all but the final 8 contesting the Open. In 2002 the junior tournament once again outstripped the Open attracting 40 entries. The disappointing entry of 16 was representative of a steady decline in interest in weekend tournaments in the Brisbane area over the previous ten years. As a result the club committee decided not to run the event in 2003.
