Vancouver to Alaska on biodiesel or bust.
We crossed into Alaskan waters just north of Dundas Island to officially say we had traveled Vancouver to Alaska on biodiesel. Here The Good Ol’ Boy’s GPS reads 54°42. Latitude… Alaska.
Our hunt for salmon eventually paid off on a spectacular morning at the northern end of Dundas Island drifting along the edge of a Kelp patch amongst Coho in a feeding frenzy. These Salmon were aggressively feeding on massive balls of juvenile Herring and Needle fish. We were limited out after about 2 hours. Dundas Island is situated in Dixon Entrance adjacent to south Alaska.
Mark Perry had kindly arranged the transport of 3 drums of the biodiesel to the Rona Building Supplies in Prince Rupert. Here the Rona forklift delivers the fuel to the government dock were The Good Ol’ Boys is moored.
Burdy and Leif returned to Vancouver from Prince Rupert were Dr. Don Propp (aka the Squire) and Ben Darling had flown in to meet me to begin the trip south. Here we topped up all fuel tanks with biodiesel in the late evening sunlight.
The following morning leaving Prince Rupert harbor with full fuel tanks and one and a half drums surplus on deck. This excess of fuel provided a marvelous sense of security as usually in this country with fueling stations being so few and far between, management of fuel is an ever present priority.
