YORK ARCHEOLOGICAL TRUST
BIOGRAPHICAL DATA-BASE
I enclose a print-out of the search of our data-base
that you requested, and I hope that you will find it useful. An expla-
nation of the lay-out and the sources used now follows. I hope
that you will contact us if there is anything that you do not
understand.
The data were gathered from various printed and manus-
cript sources such as wills, freemen's lists, religious records,
charters and taxation records. The data are arranged in eight fields:
surname, Christian name, sex, place, job, date, type of record,
and a code indicating where the entry may be found. The sign * indicates
that the person appears in a document relating primarily to somebody else.
The sign / is followed by a volume number. Names of places and
jobs have been left as they appear in the original, but fore-names
and surnames are in the process of being changed to modern
spelling, using Reaney's Dictionary of Surnames and the Oxford Dictionary
of First Names as guides. You are strongly advised to consult the
original source, particularly if you wish to know the original spelling.
Most of the printed sources quoted here are kept in the Minster Library at
York, or at the Yorkshire Archeological Society in Leeds.
