Profile: Bruno Brookes: Born in 1959 in Stoke On Trent with the real name Trevor Brookes, and was hugely influenced by Radio Luxembourg's DJs. Bruno burst to fame on BBC Radio 1 in 1984, and went on to present the Top 40 show on Sundays from 1986 to 1995 having taken over from Tommy Vance & Richard Skinner. He was one half of early morning breakfast due Bruno & Liz (Kershaw).
Take a look in the Guinness Book Of Hit Singles under 'B' for Bruno and you'll be referred to 'K' for Liz KERSHAW & Bruno BROOKES! Bruno & Liz reached No.53 and stayed in the charts for 2 weeks in December 1989 with a cover of Kim Weston & Marvin Gaye's 'It Takes Two', where they were joined by Jive Bunny and London Beat. All proceeds went to Children In Need. The duo also hit the charts again, staying around for just one week and reaching No.54 in December of 1990 with 'Let's Dance' On this second occasion, Bruno made up for Liz's credit being first in the 'Hit Singles' book by getting the disc catalogued BRUNO 1 on the label and in record history. Bruno & Liz were joined by the other Radio 1 DJ Posse on this second release.
On 24th February 1995, after 11 years at the station, Bruno was sacked by Trevor Dann, only a few minutes after finishing his early morning show at 6.30am. It is reported that he was said to be "gutted" when told his £100,000 contract, which ended in April 1995, was not being renewed. Bruno went onto say he had actually quit because he was fed up with getting up at 3am, and future axe wielder Matthew Bannister could not offer a better time slot. This made Bruno the last of the pre-1993 era DJs to be dismissed by station management in 1995. Dave Pearce, who had moved in from Kiss FM, took over his early morning show with Mark Goodier taking control of the Top 40 until 2002. Bruno was at one stage the manager of Chris Moyles, and, using his home studio, recorded a regular syndicated radio show 'Bruno at the Millhouse'. He was married to Anthea Turner for ten years.
Over more recent years, Bruno has presented television programming, most noticeably a dating game more recently rebroadcast on game show satellite channel Challenge TV. Bruno was also involved in a consortium applying for the local radio licence in Newbury, Berkshire, however, his group were unsuccessful.
Whereabouts: Bruno co runs a radio training school with another ex-Radio 1 DJ Neale James www.radioschool.co.uk , at Newbury in Berkshire, which has spawned some successful broadcasters around the country. His school runs day courses as well as longer courses. He is still in television, presenting a fishing programme for SKY SPORTS.
Bruno married former model Debbie
Brooker in 1994 and went on to be involved with Storm Radio, the UK's
first 24hour internet radio station, now aiming to win regional and local
analogue licences. His own company 'Bruno Brookes Media Entertainment' or
BBME, is based in London's Bond Street. He was part of a group which
unsuccessfully bid for a local radio licence for Newbury in Berkshire. It
is not known whether Bruno retains any radio interests to date.
