Profile: Steve Dennis: During
the early to mid eighties it seemed it was impossible to escape Steve Dennis
if you lived in the West Midlands – he appeared to be always on the radio or
at your local discotheque. Year
after year he won every relevant accolade going! A
farmer’s boy from Norfolk
who, following college, relocated as a teacher and DJ to Birmingham.
During the 60’s and 70’s he worked widely in colleges and across
Europe under the name Stevie Laine but it was following becoming the resident DJ
at Faces (Faces French/Faces International) in the last 70’s that the STEVE
DENNIS takeover began. At that time
Faces was ‘The Club’ and ‘Supreme Club of the Year’ in the UK.
With
Club and Disco Mirror, Steve instigated The National DJ of the Year Competition
and began The Annual DJ Convention (later The International DJ Convention in
association with Tony Prince of DMC). Throughout
the 80’s Steve was a fixture on BRMB Radio but will always be
associated with the programmes 'Discotek' and 'Romantica'.
The latter gave BRMB unheard of listening figures for late and
overnight radio.
Whereabouts: Steve is now a high-powered leisure business executive, because in the late 80’s Steve joined with Stephen Thomas and was founding director of Luminar Leisure Limited. The company quickly grew to become the largest and most successful leisure company in Europe. Brands include Liquid, Ikon/Diva, Chicago Rock Café, Jumpin’ Jaks, Oceana, etc. Steve can still be heard making occasional forays onto the airways. He has retained his energy and sharp incisive wit!
