Profile: Steve Wright: Born in Greenwich in August 1954, Steve Wright's childhood ambition was to work in the entertainment business. After a variety of jobs, Steve got his big break in the seventies at the legendary
Radio Luxembourg, where he presented his own nightly show before joining the BBC in 1980 to present the Saturday night slot on
Radio 1. He famously moved to daytime with his Steve Wright In The Afternoon show which revolutionised radio by introducing the zoo format to the UK.
Steve and his posse made their mark on the station's breakfast, afternoon and weekend shows, and won a stackful of awards, including Best DJ of the Year as voted by readers of The Sun, the Daily Mirror Readers Poll and by Smash Hits in 1994. In 1998, Steve was awarded TRIC Personality of the Year for his radio programmes.
Steve joined Radio 2 in April 1996 to present two shows for the network: Steve Wright's Saturday Show - a morning show of celebrity interviews and music - and Steve Wright's Sunday Love Songs which still features the country's favourite love songs and delivers dedications.
On BBC Television Steve has hosted Home Truths, The Steve Wright People Show, and Auntie's TV Favourites.
Whereabouts: Steve took over from Ed Stewart on Radio 2's afternoon show in 1999, renaming Ed's 'Accumulator' quiz as 'The Big Quiz' - the show, with a familiar posse format, and the moniker 'Steve Wright In The Afternoon' continues to combine top celebrity interviews, The Big Quiz, Non-Stop Oldies, and chart hits, every weekday afternoon as well as continuing to present the Sunday Love Songs show. He currently writes and presents the top-rated Top of the Pops 2 on BBC2, and he also presents Wright Around The World for millions more listeners on the BBC World Service. His Saturday morning Radio 2 show was taken over by Jonathan Ross.
