I Am With You

You live in Jerusalem; I live in New York.
Your home is Israel, mine is America.
You experience the hatred of terrorism; I watch it on television.
You live in everlasting fear; I don't know what fear is.
There are vast countries and huge oceans between us.
You watch blood flow grotesquely down your streets; all I see is pavement.

But please do not forget…

You fear, and so do I.
You cry; I do too.
We pray the same ancient, holy words.
We turn to the same God.
As your tears are mingling with your prayers, mine are also.
My home might be America, but Israel is my homeland.
Your friend is dead, I wear her name on my wrist;
and I don't let myself ignore your pain.

I wish I were with you.

I lay in bed at night and quietly say a prayer, and I am comforted knowing that you are too.
