Oil
back
Across many crashing oceans,
Over snow-capped mountains and dry terrain,
There exists a single notion
Which dictates all our world's pain.

We get absorbed in its politics,
We excite our people and fear its possessor,
We let it skew our actions,
And all the while it diminishes faster and faster.

Back in our homes with the ones we love,
It warms our hearts and brings us joy.
It affects every facet;
It has influence on every girl and boy.

We talk about it constantly,
And remark on how it is changing our lives,
We plan for its elimination,
But we know we are forever tied.

It changes how we think,
It changes how we act,
It changes our democracy,
It stimulates every pact.

And as we argue back and forth,
And question whether or not to use reserves,
It is quickly running out all over,
But that tension doesn't even reach our nerves.

We let it take a hold of us,
We get so carried away.
We are so blinded from the very fact
That it might not be there the next day.

It burns away; it will soon be finished.
It is oil and gas –it is your life diminished.
